So my M38A1 has been at the shop for last year for an engine rebuild that would supposed to take 3-4 months. It hasn't been touched by the mechanic (he claims the machine shop can't get parts). I think he's just lazy and/or working on other projects (he doesn't know I talked to the machine shop and they have parts). I'm tired of being jerked around & ready to get my jeep on the road.

The other day I found a civilian F134 motor for sale close to me at a nice price (much cheaper than the rebuild cost).
Is there anything special I would need to do to toss the civ F134 into my M38A1? Obviously I would need to swap over all the accessories and the normal electrical stuff (if I wanted to keep the 24v systems).

There are some very minor differences over the years, but nothing that will cause any trouble.

This morning I drove 2hr each way up to Amarillo to pick up the motor. If all goes well it will be installed in the jeep by next week.
This guy had a super COOL place. He owns a TON of jeeps in various states ranging from fully restored to project status. I was in jeep heaven. Here are pics of my motor, video of it running, and a video of one of his fully restored CJs. It a beautiful restoration!. enjoy

Some prefer an electric fan, but I don't know why. Still, I think it is a beauty.

    Good score on the engine!

i like the look of the old steel fan spinning around in there, but i guess it's personal preference.

It may be because you are young and find danger exciting.

Nobody is afraid of an electric fan, but that steel one can bite you. Had one come loose in an old Chevy once and it did some damage on it's way out.

Or start at any time without warning. At least that's what the safety labels claim

No need to fear.... mine is going to have the jeep howl and the stock fan. The electric fans stayed in his restored jeep

I got my F134 done by a shop in Abilene, TX and he did a wonderful job. Just took about 5-6 months. Timing was just about right , due to rebuilding transmission, transfer case, steering box, brake system and axles and cleaning up everything else. Let me know if you are interested I'll get you the shops info. Just dropped a 225 off to start another one.

Mechanic just sent me a pic of the new motor (with all the 24v accessories swapped over) installed in the jeep. Now it's just time to button-up the final details.

would you mind sending me the info on that shop? They sound like the place to go if/when I do this again with another jeep.

    The business is called :

    West Performance
    5550 US Hwy. 277 So.
    Abilene , TX 79556
    325-692-5261
    Owner : Jarrod West

They cleaned the engine up and magnifluxed it to check for cracks. He found on small crack and he fixed it as well as boring the cylinders, turned the crank and replaced the cam and did a valve job with hardened seats. As I said earlier they did a professional job even though they took a little extra time. Patience is a virtue! I dropped the distributor into it and it fired right up. They can do as much as you want or as little as you want. Very clean shop!! I have always said you could eat off the floor in there. PM me if you have any further questions, I live in Sweetwater, TX.
