Hey all, I have a small dilemma on my 61. The tub has no passenger side tool box. And my pass seat is just mounted to some junky channel boxes and are going to eventually tear out of my floor. I was originally going to buy a tool box and reinstall . Before that I was wondering if it would cheaper to find or make a front seat bracket that mounts to the door opening and floor like the drivers side. Kinda like a mirror of the drivers side. I'm not seeing one but I'm not sure if one was even made.

Also what am I looking at to stop my rear from hitting the fuel tank on the drivers side? Besides loosing weight, broken springs?

    Thanks,
    Bob

Try searching here for replacement seat threads. Many suggestions. I like the Smittybilt low backs.

my passenger seat hinges, which seems like the best way to go? or do you mean a mount like the drivers side but with pivots?

Without the toolbox, I would look for seats and passenger side mount from a '76-up CJ. The passenger side mounts on a ... how to describe it ... pantograph? and moves forward into the passenger footwell. You should be able to mount the driver's seat on your existing brackets.

Apparently this style mount was used through '95 in the YJ. Junkyard. CJs had low backs through at least 1980, if you want.

This is what I have. I don't care all that much if it folds forward. I was thinking instead of these 2 boxes a bar across the front, like the drivers side.

What would I do if I had a passenger side fuel tank?

Drive twice as far between fill-ups?

That could work. The later CJs have something similar, but it's anchored to the tool box. Yours would have to go to the floor. It would also have to straddle the PS fuel tank, if present. Same as the driver's side.

I bet you could cut the front tube off a driver side frame, flip it around and weld it back together and create a mirror of the driver side frame. Would be a more secure mounting, and you could put a gas tank under that seat if you wanted to.

I am not a fan of the pivoting seats anyway and usually bolt them down. I care more about not launching a passenger than easy access to that tool box. I can carry a tool roll in the cargo bed.

Simple enough to mount a hardware store door-bolt on the floor at the rear of the seat.

Some of them had a latch just like the hood latch on the windshield.

My CJ5 passenger seat has the mount on the seat frame for one of those, but not the loop in the floor for it to catch on. A door-bolt sound like an interesting way to do it.

In another thread on seat upholstery there is a picture of a green Jeep with a passenger seat frame than may well be what I was envisioning about flipping the front tube on a driver seat frame.

Is a toolbox and correct mount style what you are going for?

Walcks sells tool boxes I just got mine in the mail today. Obviously it would require fab/body work to get it installed

I'm looking for something different than what I have. I may have to just go with a tool box. I really didn't want to spend the cash on that with other items on my list. Looking at my seat again, the way it is now I cannot just add a bar spanning the door opening to the trans hump.( like the drivers side) . Not without a new seat bracket.

    if you have fabrication skills
you can make what you need . a mirror image of drivers side
just saying , but the tool box is handy

Run your passenger side tube as a mirror to the drivers but it will need to be farther forward to catch the front pivots. I used some heavy water pipe. Not ideal but works.
You can kinda see it here. If you use a driver's tank the filler will be hanging out the door opening and catch your... tailbone every time. You can barely See the cap in the 2nd pic on farm (i had dual tanks for my drives to Missouri from NY)
They do make passenger side tanks but you will need another filler opening in the side. On mine the passenger seat had a triangle on the wheelhouse that the seat frame landed on.

FWIW I don't plan on replacing the 2nd tank or toolbox. I'll put some footman loops down for a cargo net but as long as I don't have a fussy passenger I can carry stuff on the whole floorboard there (shovel sledge high lift or pickaxe) it is a lot of space to loose. I plan on a 15gal rear tank before returning to the passenger tank (fillups are a pia btw)

This is the tank you would be looking at.

Ya, im not really looking to put a tank there just the bracket that would have worked with a tank. The few passenger side brackets I found were made to mount on top of the tool box I don't have.
