It was a real nice day today. Installed my new shifter spring and washer. Didn't make a difference so I stacked the old one on it and reinstalled everything. Now the shifter isn't flopping all around. Also added the old shift knob I took from the '81 before I sold it. Fogged the front with paint since most of it was removed by a chain. Went for a drive down some forgotten gravel roads. The storm from yesterday flooded everything on either side of the road and washed out a couple of spots. I hadn't been down those roads since I sold the 2A (3 years?). If you wanted to test your suspension, those are the roads to do it on. Plug #4 fouled out when I got back into town. I blame the Rotella oil but I think it's time to retire the old engine anyhow. It's gotten me by the past 232 miles but it is also the reason I don't fully trust this thing to get me where I'm going. Maybe after I get the FF and transfer case rebuilt I can focus on that. Until then I'll toss in another spark plug.

I hobbled around still with a cast and cut the POS Bubba channel iron front bumper behind the spring mounts.
Then welded in new 3" frame extensions and new cross member.
I have a 3" square tube front bumper made up to match the rear, and will add heavier plate between bumper and cross member for power steering gear box mounting.

Got my new-to-me headers installed. I got these from member Rejeep a while back. I stripped them and coated them in POR-15 high temp coating, aluminum color. I put 2.5" Thrush turbo mufflers on them.

Before I get to the pictures, let me explain that the last time I had headers on the Jeep was around '90. I swore them off forever after that. So why did I go back to headers?
Real reason: they are fun to cruise around in and make noise. Period. I am reverting to my childhood more and more as I am approaching 60 years old.

Excuse reason's for people who need it: (this is like a public service for others considering this swap and have to explain it to their wife):
    1) they do increase performance and improve MPG, so I am helping the environment
    2) I intend to spend more time in the mountains and these will produce noise to warn bears
    3) they open up the area under the jeep to allow installation of other stuff such as a proton torpedo generator, etc.
    4) They improve relations between jeep drivers and noisy Harley riders.

Anyway as far as the sound it is indescribably beautiful! The closest thing I can compare it to is a Cessna 172 on take-off roll. It doesn't sound like a V8 or a 4 cylinder.

Yes. I'd love to hear it in a video. I have Flowmasters on my V6, side exit in front of the tires. It's obnoxious. I've been thinking of going back to Turbos like I used to run but can't remember the sound. I just remember someone saying it sounded like a pissed off bumble bee.

Drove all over the property today. The farmers will most likely start working the dirt tomorrow so it was my last chance:

Stunningly beautiful property there. I'm jealous.

Not today but on Friday my order of wheels came in from Quadratec. I'm downsizing from the 31s that were on the Jeep when I bought it to a 235/75R15. So I ordered some 15x7 wheels to go with those new tires. Started mounting and balancing them, got 3 of them done up and when I went to grab the 4th wheel I noticed the box wasn't quite the same size as the other boxes.......yeah pull the wheel out and instead of a 15x7 with 4 inch backspace and no offset, they sent a 15x8 with 2.5 inches of backspace and 60mm of offset.

Of course Fedex didn't drop them off till late so Quadratec was closed already but I went ahead and filed an electronic request for an exchange. Call them this morning and get a live person on the phone.............oh that 15x7 is backordered until the end of April or beginning of May. Of course. I knew that was going to happen as soon as I found the wrong wheel in the stack. I told them i'm not leaving my Jeep immobile for the better part of a month (I sold the 15x8s and 31s to my brother for his CJ7) but they had no solutions for me.

Told them I'd look for a different source for the wheel but to leave the new order open for now. Found one on Ebay about 20 mins later. After it comes in sometime this week I'll verify it's the right one then have Quadratec cancel the order and refund me for one wheel.

    What a headache :/

Ordered the OBA parts I need and finally got a chance to get to my steel supplier and have them cut out a flange for the compressor. I had to oblong the holes since the guy who usually programs the plasma cutter wasn't there today... I'll be running 1/2 air hose, lines, and fittings. The downside is I had to get a reducer to go from 1/2" to 1/4". Oh well. Hope it works ok without a tank. I also picked up 25 ft. of hose. It's probably a bit more than I needed.

When I pointed my pinion towards the D20 it made my old fill plug null and void on the D44. I searched for a few hours and this was the second cheapest option. I don't like the looks of it but it was (relatively) cheap. It has a drain plug, high fill plug, and dipstick for checking fluid level. Picked up a lube locker gasket to go with it.

    Mr Vaughan

this happened yesterday, but stick with me

the jeep runs! we had issues getting a consistent spark, which were solved with a new coil. we also got new rotor, cap, wires, and plugs, so it shouldn't have any issues in the future. now, once we get the T90 and D18 rebuilt, it'll drive!

Picked up this Warn 6014 for $50 this morning. It came off a 73 CJ5 just like the one I had. The guy didn't know what he had; thought the winch mounting plate was worth more than the winch itself.
Interesting winch. It has power in/out and you free spool by moving the brake lever. I'm going to try and mount it on the 3b...

Still carb futzing I threw in the towel. Pretty sure it was leaking somewhere but really couldn't pin it down, probably throttle shaft. Ordered a reman from Summit. Best $187 I ever spent. 5 minutes with the vacuum gauge and timing light, burned rubber with no stumble or hesitation.
Finally...now to shackle reversal to keep it on the road and get on the spare/jack/fuel carrier for Colorado :bananatool:

Got everything hooked up and tested the compressor on a couple of tires. I ran it for ~10 minutes to make sure everything was alright. I neglected to buy an oil/water separator and I need to get one. A syringe worked great for filling the compressor with oil. When running beat up Jackman wheels, it helps to have OBA or an air tank handy. It only took me 7 years to rig up OBA...

Test one was a failure. The clip on tire inflator didn't work as well as I'd hoped. It took about 2.5 minutes at ~1500 rpm to fill the tire from dead flat 0 psi to 35 psi.

Try #2. This is much better than the clip on inflator. I'll have to get a cheaper dedicated tire inflator though. I meant to see if an air tool could be run on it. There was definitely enough oil to keep the tool lubricated.

On these Mopar compressors is this EPR Valve you need to remove so there isn't a restriction on the inlet air.
