Just looking at my 74 windshield frame and wondering what one is to do prevent further rust on the inside of the tube where there is no access for cleaning or painting. I am certain there is rust in there and probably was no corrosion inhibitors or paint placed on the inside of these at the factory. suggestions please. Thanks Jim

Some others members asked the same question, it depends on how "rusted" it is. There are some on sale, old or new, I am not enough specialist.
Maybe injecting foam inside... I have the same problem with hard-top and doors, but I was able to send anti-rust inside, so it was ok but it was just lightly rusted.
Cars were not protected from rust at this time, I had a Citroën DS rusting with no solution, the steel was just painting.
I remember pushing this car once, the bottom of the door was in bad shape, a blade of cutting rusted steel was outside a bit and cut my led so well that I had to go to hospital for urgent sewing...

Usually you would use some type of cavity wax to prevent rust in door interiors and so forth. You can do plenty of reading online using that as a search term.

Foam is not an option because the interior of the frame must remain clear for the wiper linkage. And IMO it would do nothing to arrest the rust. I'd probably buy a can or two of Fluid Film and use the supplied wand to cover the interior. Some small discreet access holes may be needed for full coverage - easily covered by the padded dash, if you have that.

Ok, my mistake! I use it for building, not for cars! But I use rustol Owatrol for cars, I have a can ready for action...
Long ago, I have used plaster to fill holes in a car, but that was to sell it...

Fortunately, the tube surrounding the frame is a bit heavier gauge metal and is capped at either end by the post of the upper hinge, so it seems to survive bad rust. In the past, I have pulled the hinges out (expect to break off some of the mounting bolts), and a hand impact driver helps remove the large bottom screws. I have sprayed CRC Marine Corrosion Inhibitor in both the tube frame, as well as the box section of the lower frame, which is much more vunerable to rusting since it is just sheet metal and usually bare, unpainted metal inside.

Cut back and weld in new steel? It would be covered so it does not need to be pretty. Bead blast first.

The rest of the frame is in really good shape, only the little thin (18 gauge x 1/2 in.) strip or lip that is hidden by the rubber seal is what is rusted away. about half of it is still ok across the top section. I was thinking I might find a slim strip of metal that is very ridged( like a band saw metal blade that would be less likely to warp from the heat) and weld it in, we will see how it goes I have nothing to loose if it fails.
Thanks for your replies, if anyone has further suggestions please post. Jim

Mmm. If you follow Robert (MP&C) on GarageJournal and other places, he demonstrates how to weld sheet metal without warping in some of his posts. His approach is to use his MIG as a spot welder, and weld a dot at a time, every few inches. He then planishes those spots to relieve the local tension on the steel, and makes a new row of dots. Repeat until the entire row is filled in.
