Steering Stabilizer ???????????

    OK, the box is replaced. Many choice words thrown around :D and now I'm on to a steering stabilizer.....I think. I'm not sure "exactly" what these do, or how to install a kit on the 75. Could anyone explain the exact purpose and to what the stabilizer attaches to???

    Dampner,shock absorber doesn't allow road shock to be transfered to the steering wheel. Attaches to steering pitman and a stationary point like the axle or frame.

    IMHO they cover up other things needing to be rebuilt...;)

    I had one for years...after I rebuilt the knuckles and replaced tie rod ends I bought a new stabilizer just figuring I needed it. For giggles I left it off just to see how things felt...and I never put it back on.

    They certainly help keep the steering wheel from ripping your thumbs off.....IME.;)

    The first Jeep I owned was a 1971. I put a trailmaster 4" lift on it and it had serious death wobble. The ross steering was loose. I installed the steering stabilizer and the death wobble went away. This was back in the early 80's, I was young and dumb. I agree with Mike. If your Jeep is healthy in the steering dept. You won't really need one. They do mask problems.

    I do..... But on really rocky trails, the wheel still whips back and forth, especially without a damper.......I agrre with you guys that it can and will cover up other problems, but I think if you front end is healthy, they can be beneficial...

    I don't think that's neccessarily true ...

    On an intermediate, some would wobble a little even from the factory (ca 72-3). Wasn't a death wobble, but annoying to customers who felt that the steering wheel should not shake at all. By 75 IIRC they all came with a stabilizer from the factory.

    BTW the mechanics loved the factory-kit stabilizer install, because the book called for 1.5 hrs or such, and they could do it in 20 min easily. Door goes up, car comes in, steering stabilizer goes on, and the car sits in the garage for at least another hour ... didn't want the customers to feel they were being cheated. :rofl:

    So should I install one since it probably had one from the factory??? I'll probably go with a Black Diamond kit since I plan on putting that lift on at some point.

    Are you looking for originality or function? I'm Dutch....try it without and see if you need it on the function side. If it's originality, add it. They aren't that expensive.

    If you have larger or heavier tire and wheel combination those things are going to magnify road shock, stabilzer will help to not transfer that to the wheel. It can also to a point mask inperfections in your front end condition that is until you develop some serious problems. So you will probably want to make sure everything else is in good condition while your under there.
