Want To Add Parking/emergency Brake

    This whole jeep has been unusual. The interesting part is probably being so curious about who the previous owners were and the things they did to this thing. It would be interesting to talk to them way back over the years.

    Not to hijack this thread, but do you have pictures of how yours came out? Doing the same thing with mine at the moment using pretty much the same parts. I’m having a difficult time deciding on the best way to mount and run the cables. Interested to see how others ran theirs.

    What more do you need? Any intermediate Jeep could serve as a model. The tub is the same in this area. You could even look at the later CJs where the parts are slightly different but the layout is the same.

    For myself, I was just curious on how those with early cj5’s routed their cables when they upgraded to the 11 inch brakes, specifically where they mounted the brackets to hold the cables. There are lots of different ways to skin a cat and interested to see what others did in case their idea was better than mine. Hunted through old threads, but unfortunately some of the pictures don’t work anymore.

    A PO went through the effort of running the parking brake cables to an intermediate CJ pedal when they put the centered axle under my A1. Unfortunately another PO decided to cut everything out when the cables froze up, so now I get the fun of putting it all back together. The diagram you posted is very helpful though, thank you.

    The frustrating part for us trying to help is we don't have all the answers to what a po has done and we aren't a company that supplies a proven kit and providing tech support on known parts

    Best we can do is say AMC did this... make it look as much like an intermediate as possible since that is as close as you can get. We are volunteering our time and experience so the best thing to do is to read a reference one provides over a few times or maybe check on YouTube.

    The backing plates shown are formed but. Not punched for e-brake cables.you would need to buy the cables and drill whatever hole it needs in the backing plate. Then the cable should hopefully connect in a fork on the arm behind the brake shoe.

    There is not a standard way to run the front cable. I personally hate parking brake pedals on vehicles. I want a broomstick to pull for each side and an open diff. I would have the levers between the seats. Others would use the cane in the dash with a lever for mechanical advantage. Others would buy a rear disk brake kit with electric parking brakes a switch and instructions.

    Even between the two jeeps discussed one may need one setup but the other might be different which is why it is discouraged to bump an old thread for your current project if it is not the same exact jeep.

    If the levers are there, I suspect the holes are too.

    I agree, there's lots of leeway in how you run the front cable. If you wanted, you could change to a shorter cable and put a lever between the seats. The M38A1 had a lever like this, lots of small cars have a lever that might be adapted, and IIRC Speedway sells hot rod parts that would work - likely Wilwood too.

    Raining today and approaching dark here, so it's too cold and wet to look under my CJ now.

    If you look at the drawing, there are clamps for the cables in the middle that keep the cable from flopping down or catching on obstacles. There is a clamp at the end of each cable that is Jeep PN 921091 and is available from Walcks:
    Emergency Brake Cable To Transmission Cross Member Clamp 1960-1963 Pick Up Truck, Station Wagon, Sedan Delivery And 1957-1964 FC 150, FC 170 (not cheap). You need two of these for this application.

    Likely covered in earlier threads, since my browser remembers the link. You could probably make something like it. You really need this clamp to work, since it anchors the sheath and you pull the cable against it. I would get the rear cables, make a loop like the drawing and see where they would naturally be anchored.

    My apologies, and please understand that my intention is not to sound obtuse or needy or to have my hand held in a step by step process. I came across this thread and noticed that Bob answered the OP and stated that he did the exact thing I’m doing and was just curious what route he took. This is a great forum, and I do really appreciate all the help from those who have owned these Jeeps for years and can provide a wealth of knowledge and experience.

    Tim, thank you for this link. I’ve was looking for those original clamps but was striking out so I fabricated them instead. If they don’t work well for me, I’ll go through Walcks.

    Please don’t bother crawling under your CJ just to take pictures. I have the new cables ran, the pedal in place and have the clamps mocked up where’d I’d like them.
