Hey all I need some input. It looks as if my spring hanger tore itself off of the frame and took the section of frame it’s attached to with it. And bubba just booger welded the piece back on and secured it with a thick piece of angle iron. I cut the angle iron off today to inspect the damage. How should I go about repairing this? Cut off a larger section of the frame and weld a new section on? Should I just reweld the original piece and weld a 6 inch long or so strap over the top? 9E4AD2EE-A9E3-425F-8FE1-F8FA096F05C6.jpeg

You could put a plate across the open part of the frame to make a box. How good are you at welding? The strap in the channel would work too. I would cut the ends of the strap in a triangle to make a trapezoid with some long ramps. Same idea as adding a fish plate to repair.

I like the idea of welding in a new section of frame, if you have a piece available.

What you have right there will stress the weld joint because the hanger is the same size as the welded piece. If you can get a section of frame that is half the height and six or eight inches longer on each end I think you would spread out the stress more.
If that's not a possibility I'd strap it and drill a couple holes in the strap to plug weld it to the existing frame piece above the spring hanger.

I would rework that area and clean it up. Maybe buy a new spring hanger too. Then I would put a few gussets in there.

The reason it breaks like that is because the area at the hanger is stiffer than the surrounding frame. This cause stress risers along the edges of the hanger. When the spring flexes, the frame acts like a hinge with its boundaries at the hanger edges.

I like the idea of the plug welds to unify the hanger with your strap. I would also make the outside edge of the strap extend along the outside edge of the channel for quite a ways, tapering down to a dull point. If you wanted, you could make an angle plate like bubba did, and plug weld that to the web of the channel. I'd want to bend the angle from plate, so that the bend radius fit tightly in the frame - unlike bubba's angle iron.

I think I’m gonna end up putting a strap on there. 1/8 thick and make it extend 5ish inches beyond the break. I’ll do it to the other side too as a preventative measure. Plus the lack of symmetry would drive me crazy haha. I don’t plan on keeping these hangers anyways I’ll probably do a YJ conversion somewhere down the line so. I’m also fully boxing the frame while I have everything apart so that will add a level of rigidity.
