    So... I'm a new Jeep owner of an old 1973 CJ-5 which came to me with a Viking Winch. (Gardena, Ca) The winch appears functional, but it's obviously been neglected for a long time.

    I was hoping someone might have a little experience to share on this Viking winch regarding possible capacity, and any maintenance info, parts availability etc.

    I live on a dirt road in the desert, and haven't ever needed a winch thus far... (Although there have been some very sketchy moments a few times!) I don't really need the winch, but since it's here I figure I might as well make sure it's taken care of!

    Thanks in advance! I have a couple photos, but as yet haven't figured out how to attach them to this email.

    Best regards, Rugerhound (Pete)

    Looks like a knockoff of a Ramsey.

    Interestingly there were also "Rhyno" winches, coincidentally also in Gardena (but apparently actually built in japan), that were copies of Ramseys.

    Someone had one of those PTOs on Craigslist somewhere recently (and wanted a crazy sum for it). I cannot figure out how the coupling works with those three pins; it does not engage a normal PTO sprocket in a Spicer 18 so every time I see one I assume the part that is missing is still in the t-case it came from.

    They just fit in between the teeth on the drive sprocket. Pretty hokey but it works. :crazy:

    Gotcha. Yeah I would not count on that for heavy use. You know for all my internet searches on these things I never ran across your page. Good stuff.

    I don't doubt it would not be ideal for something like running a bush hog but who knows? I did do the math one time & for a 8000 lb winch @ rated line speed you're only using about 3hp, can't recall the torque at the pto input but it's not excessive.

    Edit- Hah, still have the calcs- actually ~4 hp.

    Gear ratio = 60:1

    8000 lbs pull

    drum Dia= 4"

    Drum radius = 2"

    Sprocket diameter = 2"

    Sprocket radius = 1"

    2" / 12" = .17 ratio

    8000lbs * .17 = 1360 ft-lbs torque

    1360 ft lls / 60 = 22 ft-lbs input

    1" / 12" = .08 ratio

    22 / .08 = 275 lbs torque

    HP = (T*N)/5250

    HP = (22 ft.lbs. * 1000 rpm)/5252

    HP = 4.18

    Interesting stuff! Well I didn't figure the winch was anything to write home about, or there'd be more info out there about it. I'm knockin' on 70 and haven't needed a winch yet, so this one isn't apt to see a lot of use! Still it's good to understand the limitations of this old hardware in the event I should need it.
