I agree with you two. I need to dig up the old coll and see if it makes any difference.

 

Fuel pump seems to be pumping a decent amount of gas when cranking.

Changed the coil back to the old one. Still having the same problem.

Looking at the timing, I've got it set to 5 degrees base timing and it advances up to 20ish degrees at 2000 rpm and the stops advancing. The engine starts running poorly there too.

I'll dig into the avance mechanism next, but my wife says we need to go work on the driveway.

 

Hmmm, never heard of tail light lenses causing a miss, but there's a first time for everything!

 

And the accelerator pump diaphragm leaks. On order be here Tuesday....

 

Cleaned and lubed the centrifugal advance weights and the timing is behaving a little better. Order a tuning kit since it's only doing 10-12 degrees advance total.

When checking the timing advance, I noticed that even sitting in the shop, running at higher RPM with no load for a little while will cause it to pop and want to die out like it's running out of gas. I'm guessing I have a blockage in the tank or a collapsing fuel line somewhere. I've got a fuel pressure gauge coming to I can verify this. I've also got a some fuel hose coming so I can run off an external gas can to see if that makes a difference. I might be dropping the tank soon.

 

Front brakes rebuilt and tub back on.

 

I spooled a winch line on the PTO-powered winch for the first time since rebuilding this '68. I replaced a couple of zerks and greased 'em all. Then I filled the right side with the appropriate level of gear oil. My wife is in the cockpit working the clutch while I guide and tension the wire on the spool. First gear was ridiculously slow. Third gear is just about right.

My buddy needed to install some new shocks on his YJ so I told him to bring it over. On the way he lost a rear wheel!


He has no idea where the lug nuts went.



it was only a mile from my house so ran up there with my highlift jack, my cordless impact and a pocket full of lug nuts.

It lives!!! Wiring 99% complete, just need to figure out if wiper motor needs power or ground on green and Red wires. Some discussion I searched mentioned that a 74 needs ground, but old motor (only one speed working - slow) parks with black, but needs power to get motor to move, not ground. I have a new one coming as old one has a broken housing. Also need to run a new +12 to electric radiator fan controller, PO had only run a switched line. But all lights/signals, winch, gauges, starter, etc. work
Next up getting cage installed, then seats and seat belts, etc. Also need to fill fluids and get engine running. But at least I see the light at the end of the tunnel on the wiring! Oh, and picked up a nut setter so I can get the floorboards put back in place!

 

Put in a new accelerator pump diaphragm. No more leaks. Added a gas tank vent routed high up in the wheel well. It has a valve so if you flop the tank doesn't drain.

 

I need to do that.

 

My gas cap was not venting ( although it was supposed to) tank either had a vacuum or would puke when full. This is the one I used.

Finally fixed my carb issues. I even took the valve covers off to check the valve lift because it was behaving a lot like a flat exhaust lobe:



All the bumps seem fine on the bumpstick. Comrpression was good all around at 155-164 per cylinder.

It turns out it was just the float level. When I put in the spring loaded needle valves, posts online said you should adjust the level while gently pushing the floats against the springs. Turns out that is incorrect. Let the floats naturally rest on the springs when the carb top is upside down. Adjust the level per the book accordingly. It was sucking the bowls dry at higher speeds even though there was plenty of fuel pressure.

How strange the internet was wrong.

It's running great now, but I need to put the new coil back, tune the mechanical advance, and fine tune the carb a bit. I'm glad it wasn't anything serious. Now I can move on to other things.

Put the top on. Old Kayline still holding up.

 

Took the top off. So much quieter, toured around for an hour. One things for sure, exhaust straight out the back won't work. Rolls back in too much. Stopping tomorrow for some 90° bends to turn it out the sides.
