Hi, here is a web picture of a 1974 dash. Can anyone tell me what the unknown button stands for. My CJ5 has a blank hole in there. Thanks.YH Button.jpg

Factory equipment is a blank, a plug.

Some had a plug. Mine is a factory "Brake" light. Which was hooked to the prop valvu to indicate drop in line pressure. I'm going to repurpose it into a Parking Brake light.

What are the buttons and pull levers on the bottom left of the picture?

The pic was taken just before I did full tear down for the frame off. That plate is for the Belleview winch controls but with the wrong controls. The PO modified it a bunch with a button for a light bar, a momentary starter, and some unknown button I think a kill switch. I'll turn my attention to the Belleview and controls with a full restoration of that but after the jeep is back on the road. Here's the dash now, restored waiting to go on the jeep.

Back a bit to the original poster, that brake light is made from "unobtainium". You can see it on TSM-74 electrical section 3-45. I lucked out and mine is in decent shape.

As does mine. And my '73 and other '75, IIRC.

Agree...most I see are a solid color matched plug. But this may be a Renegade only option, just a guess? I look at a lot of jeep pics online, all intermediates to aid in my period correct build. I've got a rather large file to help me. Only came across this brake option on a few. Here is one which was restored and sold at Barrett-Jackson auction, that also has this option. It is also visible in the TSM for '74. Although crappy pic in the TSM. 1974 JEEP CJ5 RENEGADE - Barrett-Jackson Auction Company - World's Greatest Collector Car Auctions

    You got me wondering.

I went out to look at my instrument cluster, thinking there would be a brake failure indicator. If it's there, I could not see it in the dark with my flashlight from the front. I know there is a connection to the combination valve, and I can trace it on the diagram to a bulb connection on the cluster.

My '82 uses the same indicator for the parking brake and the combination valve.

Jeep is the unknown mystery of life, especially intermediates! I added up another orange jeep (above) from my files with that same Brake light. Seems only '74s that I can tell have that option. I have not seen it in any other year so far. I bet only a half dozen people back in the day (while I was in diapers) were so paranoid about losing brake pressure that they checked the box on the sales order form for this rare option. Guess I'm one of the lucky ones now to have it. I have only seen this option on 4 jeeps, mine included. My wiring ran down the rear harness, exit to the prop valve on the frame. Since I did not drive this jeep yet other then onto a trailer in Texas I have zero clue if it was working. Ironically I had no breaks when I picked up. That light should have been screaming at me.. Dumb *** your brakes are out. But it did not!

    <edit> I guess I do know...it Was NOT working :) !

I don't know what yours is, and I don't know what mine is either, but it doesn't do anything that I can detect. I haven't traced the wiring yet... I've only had the Jeep for a few weeks and I'm trying to get it to run without leaking, dying, spittin', etc. ;)

Evidently there is a 'thing' about putting buttons there, 'cause this makes about 4 of 'em I've seen since I became interested in these contraptions.

    Regards, Pete

This got me looking through old pictures since my 75 is in a million pieces now. Mine apparently had the brake light although I could find no close up pictures. I zoomed in as best I could. One shot of the back of the dash if it helps.
