Have a stock ‘59 d44 geared 5.38 and looking to regear a ‘71 d44 to 5.38. Am I missing something or are the r+p’s interchangeable between these two d44’s?

I believe the 59 will be a coarse spline pinion, 71 should be fine spline. Randy's world wide lists dana 44 from 60-83. So, I don't know for sure, Ron

I don't know when the split was either but I've ran across both types in the past. You just need to use the matching yoke.

If you really just want the ring and pinion and are removing just the gears, I believe those should swap without any issues. If you take the case the ring is mounted on, whatever it may be - open, PowrLock, whatever - the side gear splines will not match the '71 axle shafts. There is a case break between 3.73-3.92 for the Dana 44. If you cross that, you will need to use the case that fits the R&P.
