You can put some baling wire around the main shaft gears and through the front shift cover holes to keep the main shaft from moving backwards. JMO - I'd drop them as a unit. I have, in the past, dropped them separately without trouble.

Also BTDT, was downshifting to hit a small hill, clutch cable broke mid-shift, and for some unknown reason, the main transmission shaft broke in half. Bad sound when you are rolling back down a hill with some grinding. Total loss on the trans.

The two gears in the photo broken are in the t case? Or is one on the end of transmission?

i haven’t seen how they mate together

I was suggesting you wire the transmission together. Donny was warning against the transmission main shaft sliding backwards when you separate the transfer case from the transmission.

There is a gear on the end of the transmission main shaft that mates with the transfer case gears - usually called the output gear or bull gear. You can see it on the mat in New Mexico's pictures above. The "small hole" case traps the transfer case case/housing between that gear and the transmission case. A "big hole" case has a bigger hole, that will fit over the output gear and allow the transmission and transfer case to separate without removing the output gear.

well I still somehow managed to pull the gears out of the trans. So I’m off to a friends gear shop. Just gonna bring him the trans, t case, and overdrive. Have him fix it, seal it all up as one unit. And pick it up when it’s done. Paint it. Bolt it up. And enjoy it.

picking my battles. And this battle I’m choosing to pass on haha

In my opinion, an overdrive really isn't needed with a V6 and 3.73 gears. 3rd gear doesn't pull too well in OD with that tall of gears, and splitting 1st and 2nd works, but is seldom needed.
If your axles have 4.27, 4.88 or some other low ratio, the overdrive is really nice.
I highly recommend oem Dana gears for replacing the intermediate and bull gear that are shown bad in your photo. The Omix gears don't seem to last very long.

Yes actually. Ordering up a clutch today while the drive trains out. Hoping to have it all back together in the next weekend or two.

Years ago I did the clutch in my '74 and bought it through Quadratec. I think I compared it to Napa and got a better deal and probably a better clutch.
As far as brand I have no suggestion, I've never shopped for a clutch for the Buick V6.

Any mass-market seller will have better prices than a Jeep specialty seller. You could check your local McParts store like Autozone too. I know my local independent parts store will match online prices.

Be careful if you buy a kit sometimes the T/O isn't the right one. Measure everything before you install the kit.
