Oh I've read ...Thanks for the tips, smaller primaries and larger power valve on order. I have an unused 400cfm afb that whispers to me from the shelf. Says " use me this year to get going, Howell tbi over the winter"

AFB's are good carbs...for the street. Off road not so much.

Hence it's on the shelf. But if this Holley doesn't straighten up, that's what's gonna happen.

Interesting, I liked AFB's for street and off road. maybe I was lucky. Ran AFB 400 CFM's on the 225 V-6 motors.

Took the Jeep out again today to get comfortable driving. drove down to the gas station, filled the tank, hung the hose up, turned around and saw a stream of gas running across the pavement. the vent hose to the roll over valve was disconnected, I tried to get it reattached but the hose was hard as a rock. So I wedged it against the frame pointing up and drove home. That fixed, I decided to go to Tractor supply and pick up my cat litter order. The drive down was OK but there is a stumble after any slight deceleration when reapplying the gas. I've played with the de cell numbers in the tuner and it no longer stall when I kick it out of gear, but things are not smooth. Also when I take off from a stop, I have to feather the gas to get going, also when going up hilll there is little power. I tried this evening to download the log files. The Fitech ECU will not communicate to any of my computers or laptops or my daughters Mac. So I sent an email to Fitech, we'll see what they have to say.

This trip exposed another issue, after loading 5 50# bags of litter on the cargo carrier, the Jeep would not start, I could hear the Hi Pressure pump running as if the fuel was too hot or vapor. The pump, reservoir tank and filter were all almost too hot to touch. I turned on the low pressure and let run for about 3 minutes and the tank was much cooler. When I turned the key on this time the pump started out hi pitched then the cooler fuel got sucked in and away we went.

So it looks like I'm going to have to relocate those, I'm thinking on the frame outside under the driver seat. ( I know, I should have used an in tank pump)

BTW when I refilled the tank, even with the fuel loss, My mileage was 15.2  This is what I was hoping for, with the 500cfm Edelbrock or Holley I got 10MPG. When the Jeep was new with the 2bbl carb it got 15 - 17.
I hope maybe even higher MPG on long hauls.:coffee:

When I picked up the jeep, that sweet tire cover wasn't in the pile.

Pulled the water pump off my 73 to change it since its been sitting for 10 years. Only to find that some electrolysis set up behind the pump and ruined my timing cover on my 304.
Then I pulled the timing cover off in anticipation to replace it when I can find one. Donno if it can even be welded and saved. Jeep only has like 50k on it

While I had my timing cover off I find my less than 10k mile edelbrock double roller timing set is wore out beyond allowable slop... looks fine in pic but has one 7/8" of slack in it...

Not such a great day wrenching on the Jeep..

Well I finally replaced my rear pinion seal today. It's been leaking for 30 years and I kept telling myself I would replace it once I changed my gearing... Even though I haven't changed the gears I thought I would finally do it so I could stop checking my oil level so often. Don't get me wrong I've done plenty of maintenance to the old girl. I've rebuilt the transmission 3 times now, The transfer case twice, The engine once and did a subsequent engine swap, replaced the body tub, etc. etc. etc. It just always seemed like too much work to replace that pinion seal... All I really succeeded in doing however was creating more work for myself because now my wife wants me to clean the 30 year old grease slick off my driveway... geeze...

Since we're 70% harvested, I can drive the Jeep all over the property. Drove up to the top of a hill with the dogs running along side:

I love this old beater Jeep. Especially after seeing what it's capable of on the Colorado trip.

Looks a lot nicer than what I'd call a 'beater.'

I'm curious - what is the crop and how is it managed? Will that stubble/straw be plowed under?

Rolled it out in the sun light for the first time under its own power, talking it down for exhaust system.

We lease the land to local farmers. This year was winter wheat planted last October. Last year was a mix of garbanzo beans and canola seed.

Last year they did not turn the stubble under and planted right through it with a grain drill. The wheat stubble is so dense this year, I think they'll have to turn it under. We'll find out in a month or so when the harvest is done and they start on fall prep.

There are moisture retention and erosion prevention advantages to not plowing. Especially on our hilly non-irrigated farmland.

    Just for you Roy
Been busy on the restoration lately. Gotta say, even though I was having fun with the tear down and reconditioning of the old parts..... Putting it back together is way more fun ;)

All cleaned up with new races and bearings. Time for the knuckles to get shimmed and installed

Knuckles back on and shimmed to 16lbs of pull

    Spindles cleaned up and polished

Self adjusting brakes back on. Just waiting for the spindle bolt strap keepers to come back from fabrication to keep it oem, then the hubs and dualmatics can go on

    Almost a roller ;)

Everyone here on the forum seems to have been doing some pretty cool stuff to their Jeeps. We've been kinda boring, no new improvements. We pulled the new Jayco Hummingbird 17RK camper with Farm Jeep Willy for a 2.5 hr. trip to see some friends and camp last weekend. No issues. Avg. 12.8mpg pulling the camper. The only thing I actually did to it was check the oil, and fill the gas a few times. No oil burned between oil changes since the rebuild. No leaks either! I am excited about that. Lol
