i am tearing apart a dana 35. Do i need to take off the brake drum for me to be able to push the axles far enough in to get thw c clip out? I got one out but i had to fight and bang on the outer axle to get it out enough for me to kind of pry the clip out. It did not just fall out with ease..

Yes. remove bolt retaining the center pin that the spider gears ride on. remove center pin, if you rotate the spider gears in side the case they will fall out. If you aren't removing the spider gears reinstall the center pin after the C clips are removed. Remove the brake drum, push the axle shaft into the housing. Some times they C clips will fall off, if not you can use a small magnet to remove them, and remove the axle shaft. Good luck, Ron

Sooner or later they have to come off. Fight the battle on your ground. Ron

What gears are in the 35 now? A trac-loc is a whole carrier. If the axle has 4.10's, bolt on the ring gear, start with original shims and see what the pattern looks like. Ron

it was 3.07. customer wants 4.10. I feel dirty regearing a turd axle, but he doesnt wheel it, it is a street rig on 33s for cruising. He got the carrier thinking it was the later factory style. I didnt realize how expensive they are for new. I just found a carrier from a buddy so the world is good

I know your deep into this, but sometimes it's easier to find a 4 cylinder axle. Ron

It is, but then you dont know the condition of the bearings inside with a used axle. It is nice to know the bearings and seals are fresh.
