I have a couple in that style - like them a lot, very handy.

I absolutely hate swiveling ones. Of course iv never had a new one that actually grabs but I always take the base off and mount them solid. I like to bend things and a vice that moves around is no good. Im using a Woden right now its been holding up well. I got it on ebay years ago I think i paid like 75$ shipped. I broke a few good ones pounding on them so i refrain from that anymore. Iv got 3 or 4 from flea markets and stuff that are good brands but very worn and annoying to work with. Heres one i made out of a chunk of broken vice just for fun. The handle is a sterling silver nose ring lol

Then get yourself a blacksmith's post vice (leg vice). Made for pounding and bending. I still get them for under $100 on occasion.

I should. My friend has a bunch laying around. he is a picker and collects anvils and that kinda stuff but he doesnt fix anything or do anything with them. I also like the sheet metal vices with pointy jaws they look handy but they are probably weaker

That Irwin vise looks good. And from your dad. A family heirloom for sure.
