    Hello all,

I am wanting to refinish my intake as the paint in peeling etc. I am concerned about doing that as i have not been able to find any intake gasket since i run a 198 some parts are rare. I also cannot find an exhaust gasket either and i want to blast and paint them as well.

Has anyone re-used an intake gasket? If i cant and or it gets destroyed when i remove intake, can i just make my own out of RTV or some other gasket maker? Is there any issues with the layout of these V6s that would hinder anything?

    Any help or ideas appreciated.

Intake gaskets are shown in lower left of the photo. I don't remember for sure, but I think the 198 uses the same type gaskets as the 225. My 215 V8 (same era as your 198) uses a valley pan gasket for the intake. My intake manifold has sizable air gap between the bottom of the manifold and the valley pan.
Does your 198 use a tin valley pan for the gasket?

I don’t really know because I’ve never taken it off that’s why I’m concerned. But from the research I have been able to find I do feel it’s a valley gasket. I guess my real question is are they reusable and can I make a new one with just RTV?

Valley pans have a raised bead around every port that gets compressed when installed. They aren't really meant to be reused.
You likely don't use a valley pan on your 198. Intakes that use a valley pan only seal to the port portion of the heads, but not across the top of the block from bank to bank. There is an open space under the intake manifold, with the valley pan sealing the lifter galley. Can you see through under your intake manifold with it installed on the black/heads?

Thats what I though it should have been, but since the Buick 215 (very closely related) uses a valley pan, I was second-guessing myself. Then the gaskets shown in post #2 are the correct ones. I think you can find a set for way less $$ than those offered. Now I'm curious how the 198 and 225 gasket sets differ?

I have a 198 and a 225 on engine stands in my shop. The 225 intake is wider.....and would not fit the 198. However the bolt spacing and port size looks identical.

If it was me I would definitely would try 225 intake gaskets before I spent the $ on the set in post 2.
