Favor to ask... if anyone is running this type of Selectro hub on their CJ5 or 6 can you take a moment to engage and disengage them for me and let me know if there is a discernible “click” in each position?

I picked up a used set recently and there is a definite “click” when I disengage them but no click when I turn them to engage.

I took them apart and everything looks ok BUT my cams do not have the nubs (my word) on them as seen and circled on the part pic below. It doesn’t appear as if mine ever had them but they could have worn down and it would be logical that their absence would negate the click when turning to engage.

Anyway, if I recall from my previous experience with Warn and Superwinch there was a click when going to both modes and wanted to check with these too.

Any feedback from those with similar hubs is greatly appreciated - thanks!!!

Thanks Howard. Do you recall them clicking or locking into place when you would go to both “disengage” and/or “engage”?

seems a little odd that they would physically lock into one position, the 2 WD disengaged position, but not into the four-wheel-drive engaged position.

No they don't click, just a reduction in force for the final little bit of twist when disengaging, the spring isn't going to let them out of 4wd when they are engaged.

Note that mine are early examples, I'm sure there were changes made during the production run.

Thanks Glenn. Maybe “click” isn’t the right word to describe it but there is a definite locking, binding, click when putting the hubs into 2WD (disengage) but not when going to 4WD.

Howard, I was thinking the spring might keep them in 4WD but I can turn the cap a bit without effort in that position and wasn’t sure if there should be more of a “locking” feel when engaged.

As always the help and info is appreciated. This is a great site!

I'd think you don't really need the detents (nubs) at the bottom of the hill, because it will stay there without any additional barrier to movement. Nubs at the top would keep it from rolling downhill. Possible they added the second set of detents in later production, just to reassure the user of positive engagement (as your concern demonstrates).

Timgr - you describe it all much better than I do and I suspect you and Howard are spot on. Thank you!

Mine do have the definite noise/feel when all the way disengaged....basically locking/unlocking disengagement.

Thank you Glenn. Much appreciated. I will see if the replacement cam works with my hubs (# on flange 52410110). The measurements are correct, but I'll dive deeper before purchasing. Thanks again!

If yours click as you describe why do you need the replacement parts?

I'm also wondering if the locking of the disengagement is only on the heavy duty hubs? Or as Howard suggested maybe simple as wasn't on the early ones but was added to later ones?

My concern is that they only click/lock in the disengaged position for me and that while engaged there is no click/lock. This may be normal for my vintage hubs (I’m unsure of the year of manufacture).

While engaged, the hub cap turns a bit And could possibly move all the up to, but not completely into, the click/lock disengaged position if the caps are subjected to contact in a rut or similar situation on the trail. The spring probably keeps the hubs locked and working properly in this situation but everything I read about locking hubs, regardless of manufacture, says to not drive with the hubs in the “in between” position- something I wouldn’t knowingly do but that could happen to these on the trail - leading to damage.

If locking in both positions was an upgrade or design change and the newer cams will work in my hubs, I’m cool with giving them a try.

Well, I can say that I understand what you're getting at and it wouldn't hurt to try to get more information for sure. However I've got a pair on my M37 that I bought brand new in '07 that is one of the ones I did the test on. The other pair I checked is on my 3B, they were on it when I bought it. The ones on my M37 have never been used in 4WD so they are still new.

Thanks Glenn - if it's not too much trouble could you get the number off the flange? Mine says Made in USA and has the number 52410110. If yours are the same number and were purchased new that might help me narrow things down. If it's too much of a pain, I completely understand. I'm probably making too much of this anyway :)

The ones purchased new are physically larger, they're for a 3/4 ton truck so I wouldn't expect numbers to match. This is interesting though, you've got my curiosity up. It seems to me that both ramps would wear equal though since locked and unlocked would/should see equal movement/wear.

Gotcha on the part numbers. Indeed - you'd think the wear would be similar IF they were originally designed with the detent on both ends of the movement. I'm going to call about the replacement 2-5/8 inch cams today. The replacement parts, from what I've read, are a hard black plastic to replace the weaker pot metal and grey plastic of the originals. Mine are the pot metal. I've found some incidents of the original cams failing after a while on some other boards so they're not lying there. More info as it comes available.

Finally got the replacement Selectro cams and got them installed on the hubs today...and they work the same as the old ones UNTIL I elevate the wheels to test things out, and then there's a "click/lock" in the engaged position as there was/is in the disengaged position. I think I'm good to go and will take the jeep out for a spin in the AM to double check and road test. Going to keep the old cams in the toolbox in case of emergency as the replacements are a hard plastic, instead of pot metal. Thanks for the thoughts and assistance over the the past couple weeks! Great people on a great site.

I have a set of the Heavy Duty models all apart for cleaning now.
Can shoot some pictures of these if you think might help.

I'm curious about the notches at both ends of the ramp myself....does your set have those?
