No it’s the 470cfm Holley truck avenger. Jeep runs so good I didn’t want to stop driving it to change my front gears.

Today I ordered (Hopefully) the last parts that I needed to complete my drivetrain swap: the clutch. Based on the T18 swap thread, I ordered the Luk 04002 pressure plate. I couldn't find a LUK friction disk that correlated to a 77-79 V8 Cj5, so I ordered the equivalent Sachs 1878654405. Hopefully everything is correct to get this all together. Rumor has it that the correct throwout bearing may come from the Luk 04002 kit, which would be fantastic.

My Jeep credit is running very slim with the wife, but I think when she sees it as a roller she'll be so impressed that she'll let me put to a "runner" status! My secret goal is to take it driving on the beach for our August vacation in OBX, NC. I doubt it will happen, but a guy can hope!

My 2a when it came up to temp it would go up to about 200 degrees before the thermostat opened and shoot down. Its been this way for quite a while. I got to thinking about it and I really didnt want it do that especially in the winter because there was so many cracks welded up in my block the shock of cold water cant be good. I figured either the thermostat was too hot , sticking, and or there is no hole in it to get water up there until it boils. I took it apart and it was a 180 stat with no hole. but it was sticking pretty hard. I put in another one with a hole also 180 and cleaned it all up with a new top hose. Works perfect now steady at 180. Very happy i checked it out

Six or seven weeks ago over Memorial Day weekend, my family was on a Jeep/ATV/motorcycle ride. As we were coming down a trail, there was a loud bang from the jeep and the right-rear tire locked up and skidded. My initial thought was the transfer case just fell out of the bottom of the jeep. The second thought was the driveshaft had broken and wedged somehow to lockup the wheel. I climbed out of the jeep and looked underneath. I couldn't see anything wrong. Everything seemed to be in place.

Like father like son. My son is on the left. His son is in the middle. Same arms, legs, same posture.

We got back in the jeep and rolled down the trail with the engine off. I could hear scraping. All of us guessed that maybe one of the brake shoes had come loose and temporarily wedged itself in the drum and locked the wheel. When we reached the road at the bottom, I started the engine and we limped a few miles home at 10 mph. At one point, the right rear wheel locked up again for 3' and skidded on the pavement before I could stop, but then immediately loosened again.

When we got home, I jacked up the rear end and removed both rear wheels and drums. Nothing looked out of place. I pulled the right rear axle and the damage was obvious.

The wheel bearing had totally disintegrated. I tried everything I had available to pull out the old bearing cup from the axle tube, but was unsuccessful. ITLKSEZ suggested welding dots on the inside of the bearing cup to cause it to shrink. All I had available was a $99 Harbor Freight flux core welder. It took more than a few dots but the trick worked.

ITLKSEZ used a torch, a press, and a bearing remover to get the bearing retainer off of the axle.

Next he tried to remove the bearing. Even with heat and pressure, the bearing wouldn't come off. ITLKSEZ said the bearing probably friction welded itself to the axle.

Notice the existing grind marks on the axle. I have a folder of repair receipts from the jeep's previous owner. I remember there was a bill for getting the AMC 20's two piece axles replaced with one piece axles. That was 17 years ago, but only eight thousand miles ago. The receipt claims a new rear axle conversion kit was installed. The PO paid $1,348.57 for the one piece axle kit and installation. It looks like either an old axle was installed or there was a problem during installation and the mechanic had to cut off the bearing retainer and install a second one.

I carefully cut off the bearing with a disc and indeed, it looked like the bearing had welded itself to the axle.

With the state of the axle and the fact there were no numbers or identifiers on the remains of the bearing to order a replacement, I decided to get a Yukon axle kit from RockAuto. The kit comes with Timken bearings.

    New axle vs. old axle.

I pressed the supplied lugs into the new axle.

After installing a new seal and bearing spacer in the AMC20 axle tube, I was ready to press the bearing and then the bearing retainer on the axle. It's awkward because there are layers of the outer seal and the backing plate.

I reinstalled the axle, brake line, parking brake cable, and the drum brake parts. My wife helped me bleed the brakes. After a couple of test rides I felt confident enough to venture into the mountains to the top of an old tailings pile, just below a mine shaft.

I hope this axle lasts longer than the 8k miles of the previous one.

Today was a fun day in the shop. I didn't really have a plan, and actually started out by just cleaning up a bit.

The other day I saw a video someone posted on here about patching body panels, and with fresh youtube confidence, I decided to do a bit of body work. 25 years ago i had pop riveted this corner on. Today I welded it!

    Screenshot_20200705-170646_Gallery.jpg

Theres still a LOT of work to do on the body, but with this work from home status, I've made a ton of progress. I'm hoping to have a rolling drivetrain by the end of the week!

Your axle may or may not hold up. I upgraded to one piece axles (Moser) in 1999. and drove across the US many times, approx 80K miles. In 2017 I noticed a noise coming from the rear, isolated it to the rear axle and decided to check the bearings, when I pulled the axle out all kinds of debris fell out, like yours the bearing totally disindegrated. when I got the bearing, race, holder, what ever its called, off the axle was discolored and scored, enough so a new bearing might not seat tight enough.
So I ordered a new axle from Moser and installed. 3000 mile later while driving up the Cajone pass in California I noticed a hot brake smell, not unusual trucks ride the brakes all the time, so I ignored it and kept driving. When I got to the top I noticed a wobble in the driver rear tire. I pulled off and the Main st exit in Hesperia. the axle housing was red hot. I pored water over it to cool. I was only 8 miles from the inlaws, I can make it!!!!
I pulled out of the lot, thru the intersection and the driver wheelcame off and rolled into the Dennys flower bed and the Jeep stopped dead. I jumped out engaged the front hubs, thru it into 4wd and drug the Jeep off into Dennys parking lot.

This axle only had 3000 miles on it. Of course Moser would not warranty the axle because it was not installed by a professional garage. But in their defense the did over nite a replacement and only charged for standard shipping.

When I got home I modified and installed grease fittings on the axle. I removed the axle and drilled and tapped a hole thru the spacer, so the grease comes out right in front of the bearing.

I have about 8K on it now and it seems to be working, only time will tell.

    Good Luck with yours.

Are Y'all both talking AMC 20 axles? I have a set for my 3B build. Are you saying you drilled the tube and the grease fitting lines up with the bearing?

Yes Sorry, I forgot the details, I have an AMC model 20 w/moser 1 piece axles.
And Yes I drilled thru the tube and spacer very close to the bearing. Tapped and screwed in a grease fitting

In my case all bearing were Timken, but quality is in question.

Dana 60 was leaking a little gear oil, so before the Maryland and then Carlisle trips, I changed the seal, along with a new differential cover. Darn if the new seal wasn't leaking now. Not much, but it should be dry. I pulled the yoke off and noticed some really small pitting, which probably chewed the seal. Installed a new Spicer yoke, and new seal. Hopefully oil tight now. One thing I noticed was the seal I just replaced was very flimsy compared to the replacement. The replacement was robust, prepacked with grease, and in a fancy corrosion control bag inside the box. It weighed about 2x as much as the one it replaced.

Try a new vented gas cap. I wonder if your old vent is gummed up and causing a vacuum.
