On My V6 I've got a cheap plastic filter just before the carb, kind of sitting on top of the intake manifold.
Worried the plastic will break or melt and flames are certain to result. Looking for an inexpensive easy to install/replace alternative. What Y'all doin'?

Generally it's the rubber hoses that crack and cause a fire, not the fuel filter body. Those hoses have caused a lot of engine fires, I suspect the filter is neglected because nothing bad happens when you drive and drive and don't replace the fuel filter. You can buy filters with aluminum bodies, Wix or Hastings for instance. 1966 JEEP CJ5 3.7L 225cid V6 Fuel Filter | RockAuto
If the replacement filter does not come with new short sections of rubber hose, get good quality fuel hose (Gates or Dayco?) and replace them. Or EFI hose. Don't reuse the old hoses.

Why do most of those filters have 3 barbs? Return line ? My return goes straight back from the fuel pump.

Yes. But those are for a newer Jeep. Get one with just 2 lines.

I use a metal gas filter (Made in The USA) in the stock location. My 1966 has the 3 barb fitting.

I have a steel one right before the pump. Its a bit of squeeze down there and the line is in kindof a tight U so i suspect that will crack eventually. It really doesnt need a filter there is one in the inlet of the 2g carb.

I prefer changing cheap filters on the trails more than touching the Carburetor on the trail I like filters after the pump above the max fuel level of the tank. As close to the Carburetor as possible. It still leaves the valves in the pump unprotected from crud in the lines, but I'd rather have a soda bottle of fuel on the windshield than fuel pump crud in the Carburetor.
