I think the asking price is reasonable, and the 401 has great appeal, I would put it in the CJ. I do like the offer you made though, let him ruminate on it for a while, he might come down to your offering price.

Such is the way with yard art finds.
Owner believed no value, so it just sits and rots away.

I am still waiting to see if he comes thru with my offer:waiting:.
I have been thinking I might tell him I would give him his asking price if I can get it to run where it is. Then the risk factor would be significantly less provided I could get it to run untill warmed up see what oil press it has, check blow by, maybe check compression. run it long enough to see if it gets any water in the oil or oil in the coolant ect. That way if it turns out to be a dud all I would be out would be maybe a days work tinkering with it.

We were always having the rail buggy crowd trying to challenge us. They said we can go anywhere that jeep can go. Finally my brother said follow me and we will see. We noticed that the only way they could go where we did was to take a BIG run at it, no crawling along. So we had a trail that went down a very long steep back bone ridge that ended in a shallow creek. No way out except back up the ridge. It was so steep a jeep would not climb up it unless the weather was very dry. One had to see-saw a turn around in the creek and start the climb at the edge of the creek water. No room to get any run before starting back up the ridge. The rail buggy guys(3 of them) followed us right down to the creek. We turned around and went up. They tried for two hours to get out of the creek, without any luck. We finally winched them up one at a time. That was the last time they wanted to challenge the jeep.

Assuming Rosie has a Buick GN engine, I would still say a warmed up 401 would still be a bit stronger running in a small Jeep. The 401 produces massive amounts of torque right off idle. A GN needs to build boost before it make its torque, and I'd guess the 401 will still make more torque overall. unless your GN engine is heavily modified.
A bone stock 401 straight out of a pickup needs a mild cam, 4 bbl/intake, and maybe headers to achieve my "warmed up" basis, nothing crazy.
With either Jeep (GN or 401 powered) there's lots of work needed to keep things like axles and driveshafts from breaking, and in a short wheelbase/high center of gravity vehicle, I wouldn't really want to be in either vehicle to find out which is faster. I somehow survived a ratty old '72 CJ5 with an AMC 390, but I was much younger!

Just havin' some fun , Donny. I've got the 700R4 , in a drag race, I would be faster. Out of the Hole , the turbo builds boost as soon as I tromp on it. Although, Rosie will do 0 to 60 in under 7 seconds . Nowadays , it takes me 15 minutes just to get her out of the Garage .
but Alas.......I think we agree , this was all just dream'n of younger, wilder days .

Yeah that 401 engine I found was more of a pipe dream, when it actually comes down to installing one in my cj I would most likely never do it. My basic goal to restore/rebuild the jeep is basically make it look and drive like the stock jeep it always was. Thirty years ago that 401 would have already been in there and running by now. But the ol fogie in me has taken hold and most of the hot rod in me has retired. My long range plan is for my daughter who likes the jeep and I want her to inherit it. Her first ride in it was on the way home from the hospital when she was born. She got her first driving lessons in it. I look at the jeep as a family owned vehicle and I think a 401 powered jeep is something I rather my grandson not have access to in the future.
