    Hello,

Last year I bought a '64 CJ5 for parts. The body and frame were beyond use. At the time I ran the engine for a few seconds, enough to know it was worth further investigation. This year I finally got caught up with other projects enough to have time to work with the engine.

I decided to construct a test stand out of 4x4 lumber assembled with lag screws. I figured the wood would help dampen vibration and be strong enough since there is no load on the engine. I had a couple front motor mounts left over so I supported the front end with those.

I naturally needed a bell housing on the rear to support the starter. I attached that to the framework with a piece of angle iron.

I wanted to be able to run the engine for a sustained period of time. So, I knew I needed to rig a cooling system. My cousin is a Subaru enthusiast and gave me a radiator from a WRX he had broken up for parts. I mounted this to the front of the framework and attached it to the engine with some flexible hoses.

For electrical I used a spare battery and a couple toggle switches to control ignition and starter solenoid.

After fixing a leak in the accelerator pump and replacing ignition points the engine starts and runs very nicely. My next steps are to go through the accessories. I want to connect the alternator wire and see if that is functional. Also I want to see if the fuel pump works. To this point I have been running the carburetor gravity feed only. This engine has an AC brand vacuum / fuel pump. I might also I see if the PCV valve is working. This one has the valve on the pushrod cover. Finally I should check valve adjustment and rig a muffler. I hit the exterior of that carb with some paint when I had it apart on the bench. That carb might end up on my M38A1. It has the flange for a Willys air horn where the YF on that vehicle is just a plain cylinder. I think someone ground off the flange to put on an aftermarket air filter.
