Hey guys, so I recently got my engine back from the machine shop, and I had them reassemble everything. He asked me which side of the engine the fill goes on, and I sent him a picture to show him the layout.

This is what I ended up with:

    Screenshot_20200510-170557_Gallery.jpg

Am I wrong, or are my valve covers upside down? :banghead::banghead::banghead::steamed:

Does anyone know of a good way to get glued on valve covers off without completely ruining them? It looks like the machinist used blue etc on the cork valve cover gaskets. Maybe I can get a razor blade under the bottom part of the gasket?

    Any help is appreciated!

Good eyes lockman, I actually unbolted them to try and get them off. They're on there good!

Twin2, when you say "switch sides", should the fill be on the passenger side, or should I just flip the covers around?

Is this how the engine was shown in your picture? Of not, might ask him to correct the problem.

    switch sides
the drivers side valve cover with the clips ( picture ). mounts on passenger side ( clips to intake side - wire loom )
yes filler cap is on passenger side . forward . PCV valve rear
    valve cover passenger.JPG
Driver side should only have a spot in middle for air cleaner breather tube

Mine is on the passenger side in the front and the tops of my valve covers are more flat than yours. I don't see a big issue with having it on the drivers side, but I think the sloping tops would bug me.

I am with Ron here...the VCs are on the wrong sides, and he has them outside in. You should be able to read the lettering from the outside....the VC closest in your pic with the fill cap should be on the passenger side....the fill cap is forward and the rubber grommet hole is for the PCV and goes to the rear.

This was the picture I sent to the machinist....it looked pretty nice so I assumed it was correct

    Screenshot_20200421-165426_Chrome.jpg

I didn't want to ask a stupid question on the forum, and I guess it bit me. I'll swap the fill cover over to the passenger side. I do have the air cleaner breather covered. I'll install a breather tube there so the engine can breath at some point. Next job, get this thing installed and running.

    Thanks for your help y'all!

Well, for what its worth, while the last pic you posted isn't correct, it isn't the same as how the mechanic did yours either. On the last pic you posted immediately above, they two covers are just flipped left and right, but at least the spark plug holder are on the outsides....You could probably run it that way without any issue as the fill cap can pretty much go anywhere and you will probably be putting a breather in on grommet and the pcv in the other.

The yard guy has got to start learning sometime. Your engine was up...

The best way to fix it is to switch the heads...

And you should cover up your trash can number. Don't want the dark web to get a hold of it...

    Now carry on... (y)

Yeah, that's how I was expecting it to come, but obviously not how I got it. I guess if I'm going to have to pull the valve covers off, I might as well put them the correct way with the fill on the passenger side. I'm kind of annoyed that new gaskets are so expensive though... $20 just for the valve covers, I think I only spent $50 for the whole engine kit!

What year is this Dauntless. My ‘66 has the breather and oil fill cover on the drivers side. I have seen both versions, depending on the year.

When I got my engine the oil filler was in the left (driver side) rear. Also the PCV was in the right rear and a stamped metal shield was on the rocker pedestals below it. When I reassembled the Dauntless, I kept it the way it was. My valve covers also had spark plug wire tabs toward the front. I would take this to mean they couldn't be installed correctly any other way, as thered be no point to the tabs being on the rear.

This is what I have always seen where there is an oil bath filter. Plus, having the oil fill cap on the driver side right above the dipstick makes sense.

wondering if it changed along the way...the pcv hole is smaller than than the breather/air bypass hole. In some examples the fill cap is with the breather and on others its with the pcv. Additionally the wire holders move with respect to this as well and stay towards the front....on my 70 with oilbath, the fill cap is on the front right along with wire holders and pcv on right rear. Left side is only breather hole at front and wire holders on LF as well. In other words its 'internally consistent' but different than the also 'internally consistent' example from Oz.
