Grill Alignment

I was putting the tub, fenders and the grill on the frame to make sure the alignment was correct before I started the body work. In order to mount the fenders to the grill I had to remove the grill mount. So when I put the hood on it seems to fit ok.

first question would be what is the proper gap or overhang on the hood to the grill?

Second the grill to the body supports seem a little short an one has a make shift extension from the las owner. Any suggestions?

So just to be clear the frame is off a 57, the tub is a 56, the hoo and engine is from a 60 an the fenders and grill are from an early CJ5 but I don’t know the year. HaHaHa.

well the only answer I can give you is
start at rear crossmember and back of tub should be flush with it
grill mount ?

 

My advice is to assemble it all and see how the alignment works out. The odds of something being bent or mismatched is pretty high and odds are good it's the frame so I'd consider you lucky if all you needed was a little modification to the grill mount. In my case I rolled a Jeep and found that although the frame measures as straight and everything else looks fine every-which-way I can think to measure it even taking the tub off twice so I could tram the whole thing, I'm still right up against the edges of my mounting holes in order to get everything put together. Then I looked at my old hood and motor mount and realized it was up against the edge and a bit crooked for that past forty years at least.
I guess I'm saying the Jeeps weren't assembled with anything like micrometer precision and by now most of them have been wrecked or at least handled roughly so don't fret if it seems to need some tweak-to-fit and as long as it looks OK to you when you put it together that's all that counts.

 

All you can do is mock it all up, put the fenders on the tub, and the grill on the fenders, the rods from the firewall to the grill and tape it all out. Like teltech said you may have to adjust a little here and there. Good Luck.

 

Thank you Teltech and Rick, I will plan to refit everything when the grill and fenders get back from the blaster. Currently I’m Blocking on the tub and finding more dents than I thought.
