There, that should take care of it. Not as pretty as I’d like, but functional

You might also want to position the cylinder with the bleeder valve pointing up. Otherwise, if or when you are working on the system, bleeding air from the system becomes a real pita.

Well crap, two steps forward and one step back. I got the body set on the frame today, and it’s looking really nice, however I ran into a bit of a snag with the headers.

I must have had my measurements a bit wrong, and now the headers will probably interfere with the steering. I knew with using the intermediate body the steering column comes out higher, but I figured I’d have room to work around the exhaust. Will be able to tell better once I mount the column.

    So now my options are
    a. Lower the bottom end of the steering column to go under the headers, which wouldn’t be terribly difficult,
    b. There’s a chance I might be able to go down between the header tubes on the rear two cylinders and build a two piece steering shaft.
    c. Find a cast iron manifold and remove the exhaust from the equation altogether. Easier said than done though, I haven’t had much luck finding a manifold yet, but have a few more places to try.

I would just like to order up a set of the Novak headers, but our dollar is just sucking right now, and between exchange and the extortion fee they charge to ship stuff to Canada the uncoated headers would prob be $600 plus.

Looking at it a bit more, even if I lower the column a bit, it still won’t clear with the headers. There is an option d too I suppose. I could always put the column in the 71 and earlier spot, and use a dash from an early Jeep in it. I don’t have any that don’t require quite a bit of work, but it’s do-able. And it would take care of my steering and header issues.

Does anyone have experience with the early jeep vs intermediates on column position when your driving as far as which one is a more comfortable position?

I’d like to put in an aftermarket tilt column at some point, but I would kind of like to avoid spending the money on one at this point if at all possible.

Well I came across a pretty good deal today. I had put a wanted ad on kijiji, essentially looking for a drivers side exhaust manifold and high mount power steering brackets, and had a fellow contact me with an entire engine for sale. He had a good running 231 he pulled out to put a small block in, and pretty much just wanted it gone. $200 Canadian (about $42 US at this point:lol:) and it was in my truck. Turned out to be an even fire, but was complete, plus had a newer 600cfm edelbrock on it, which I can use for another project. Was hoping it was an actual 4bbl manifold, but it was necked down to a 2bbl. So now whatever route I go with the steering, at least I have the parts:bananatool: 5A057FA0-363D-47F8-B78C-5B15C6ED1D2B.jpeg

So I had some spare time to work in the shop yesterday, and planned on doing my brake and fuel lines, but for the life of me couldn’t find my tube bender, so I decided to do my rear cross memeber/rear bumper.
My rear crossmember was mangled really badly, so I decided I would build an combo rear crossmember bumper.
I was originally going to do just a 2” wide, but figured I’d go 4” so I could integrate a swing out tire carrier into it similar to what lilbuff63 put on his.
I also caged all the hardware inside the bumper for the body mounts, and skid plate mount, and then caged the nuts on the frame as well so I can take the bumper off without having to get to the nuts in behind.

Now I just have to wait for my parts for the tire carrier.

A little more progress was made today. I cut my front cross member and welded in a tube for the steering shaft, and mounted my AA steering box mount. I used some 3.5” od tubing I had in my steel pile, worked nicely, and I sure do like the AA steering box mount.

So I haven’t been getting too much done in the last few days, been back to work. I guess I have got my brake and fuel lines ran, and have been painting all the misc pieces, getting ready for asssembly now. And I went and spent some money and got my new skins:bananatool:

Thanks Muzikp! Definitely been a busy winter. It’s finally starting to feel like spring is coming, so my window to complete it is closing, but I sure hope I can finish it before it warms up and other projects demand my time.

Well I’m officially sick of welding holes up! I took one of the dash panels I have and did some repair work to it. Once I stripped off the panels that were screwed and glued on I actually found the vin sticker, and a whole big bunch of damage and holes. Figured I didn’t have much to loose, so started welding them up.

It was hard to tell what was original holes or extra, so I filled them all and will start with a clean slate once my new switches all get here

I had a pretty busy week, didn’t get a chance to spend as much time on the Jeep as I’d have liked, but I got a bit of work done. I got my steering column in and got the steering shaft to the box built. With everything going on in the world, I would like to get this Jeep finished up, but I’m trying to do it without spending a whole bunch at the moment.

I am using the stock intermediate column for now, and I put the steering shaft together using the stock ujoint of the intermediate column, and part of the shaft from the 1980 parts Jeep I have. The shaft from the 80 has a DD slip joint in it and it fits the steering box, but the column spline size is too large for the intermediate column. Luckily the intermediate steering shaft fits snugly inside the other shaft so I was able to graft them together with a little welding. Not how I ideally wanted to do it, but it’s easily changed down the road. The bell couple clears nicely in the tube I welded into the frame, and clears the motor mount bracket by plenty. I ended up using my low mount power steering pump as the pulleys worked already, and I didn’t have the proper one to use the high mount pump. The shaft clears it fine though anyway.

I also spent some time getting my power brake booster and master cylinder mounted up, and my clutch master too. I had read that and Astro van booster was a good fit, and luckily I had a dead one I could rob parts off of. I mounted it in the stock location for the intermediate tub, and used the intermediate pedals, with some modification due to using the early column location. I used a adjustable proportioning valve I got from speedway motors, and a 10psi residual pressure valve for the rear brakes.

I will have to gets some better pics of the pedals too, and clean up and paint the booster and master cylinder.

Great thread! What did you do to treat your tub after you sandblasted it? Did a lot of time go by between blasting and priming?

Well I figured I’d do an update on my jeep. Once summer came I was only able to work on it for a couple hours here and there, but still got a lot accomplished. The last few weeks since winter hit I’ve had a little more time to work on it.

As for your questions truckee4x4, I didn’t treat the body with anything after blasting. It was winter here, -4f and colder at the time I was doing the body work, so there was pretty much zero humidity, and I didn’t have to worry about flash rusting or anything.

Here’s where the Jeep sits as of now, and I’ll try to do a couple posts detailing some of the work I did along the way.

One thing I ran into that I wasn’t too happy about had to do with the replacement omix front fenders. The drivers side was a good fit, and when bolted to the body fit nicely. The passenger side was another matter. When I did the fit up before painting, all seemed good, but once I started to the final assembly I found the front of the passenger fender was 1.5” lower than the drivers, and no adjustment would fix it.

I finally determined that the passenger fender was just built wrong. Because of the covid crap at the time It didn’t look like I was going to be able to get a replacement any time soon, so I cut this one apart and redid it. One thing I found was that the factory e-coat definitely doesn’t penetrate between the panels on the fender. I primed it before welding it back together, repainted it, and now it fits much better. Was much worse in person, the pics make it look a lot better than it actually was.

A few pics of other areas of the Jeep. I used an ezwire 12 circuit harness that I had bought several years ago. Very nice product, and was perfect for my jeep. I mounted the fuse panel under the hood just for ease of access, and am pretty happy how it worked out. The only glitch I ran into was that by mounting the panel under the hood, some of the wires that are required for the dash wiring, ignition switch etc, was a little short and needs to be extended.

I ended up using the stock steering column and wheel, just cause it’s what i already had, and worked well enough.

So I decided to try my hand at fabbing up some sidesteps. I have a buddy with a tube bender, so I got him to bend me up a couple of pieces of 2”. They stick out from the body 4”, and are angled downward 10deg.

I then had a local welding shop bend me a couple pieces of 3/16” plate in 90deg sections.

For the step area I used 1/8” steel, and the dimpled it with a 1” die using my hydraulic press. They turned out pretty nice, now just have to throw a coat of paint on them.
