Oem Alternator And Part #

    Does anyone know what the original part # for alternator is on the 1974 Jeep cj 5 304 v 8.

    If it matters I will be putting a painless wiring harness in, and the warn winch.

    This Delco Remy was in the Jeep when I bought it, it worked just don’t know if it’s original, The picture below shows the part number and it’s a 63 amp

    The original alt was a Motorola. I called mine crapola. The Delco is an upgrade.. I tossed mine a long time ago too and installed a Delco.. You are better off with the Delco.

    Original would be 37 or 51 amp Motorola.
    The Motorola units were phased out by Jeep to Delco units.
    1103086 is not listed in the factory parts manual; but case halves probably get moved around in the rebuild process.
    As mentioned above, the Delco units are far superior.

    There were some Motorcraft units in there too. Looked at the book, and '74 or '75 was the last year for Motorola. Pretty sure my '75 304 has a Motorcraft alternator (the book suggests otherwise - I'd have to go out and look), and my '77 258 and '82 360 are both Delco 10SI. Jeep went to the Delco for the 232/258 in 1975, presumably when they changed the brackets around to move the power steering to the driver's side. Looks like they went all-Delco in 1978.

    The Motorolas popped rectifier diodes quite often, from what I recall in the day. At that time, the mechanics would fix them (!) by taking them apart, unsoldering the bad diodes, and then solder in the service parts. Typically the alternator gets weak as each diode fails (goes open) and you lose 1/2 of each of the alternating 3 phases for each diode lost. Common complaint was a weak alternator in the day.

    Jim's right about the remans. Cases get tossed in a big pile and alternators are built and boxed to a spec unrelated to the original case numbers.

    I'd say keep the 10SI.
