I made a run to the welding supply place yesterday. $30 for a tank of O2 and $70 for a roll of .030” wire.

Another 2 hours at this, and it’s getting closer. All the high spots are gone, but there are still low spots that I need to attack from the other side. The oil-can is gone, but it’s still not as drum-tight as I’d like it.

I'm probably missing something here so please tell me I'm wrong but, I would be more than apprehensive to be using an open flame heating metal red hot next to a gas tank that has or had gasoline in it.

I was waiting for that. :D

I’m not too concerned. It’s a sealed system with only one vent that’s far from where I’m working, so fumes aren’t an issue, and radiant heat transfer is minimal.

I’ve done much stupider things. :ninja:

I just don't have the patience for that! 2 hours heating and shrinking the same spot, I'd lose my mind. Maybe that's why my Jeep is far from complete; I'm like a squirrel in the shop, lol.

well sorry . just couldn't resist
anyway seen something similar . bunch of spot welds with a mig welder on back side of sheet metal
hummm gas tank in way . do like the trap door idea (y)
I would wind up cutting hole off center . and it would just keep getting bigger

I cut 1” strips of 1/8” and rosette-welded them under the edges of the hole.

Cleaned up the welds. I’ll have to run to the hardware store to see what kind of flathead screws I can find to drill, tap and countersink into this.

Don't drill any new gas tank vents in the process!

I had to run to the hardware store for chicken food, so I grabbed some screws. Another item checked off the list.

I will when the body is out on stands.
I’ve been blocking weld sparks from the fuel lines with a block of wood that just fits in the hole. The wood is too close to that corner to get a weld without impurities from the wood burning. I’ll get it later.

It looks like an access panel on a wing. It needs some cool stickers - "No step" or "Rescue", etc.
