'70 and '71 with an F-134 should have all come with the horizontal filter setup.

That matches what I am using. I have a WIX 51050 which matches your NAPA filter.

My 61 has the canister up by the head, the bracket is held on by head bolts. The filter I took out was a napa gold 1010. I'm considering not running a filter at all after reading about oil starvation. Does anyone here do this? Do you just route the oil line that goes to the filter canister straight to the timing cover fitting? Or just plug the fittings at the timing cover and the block?

Oil starvation was only a problem because of the original oil jet having too large an orifice. Your '61 should not have a problem.

I saw quite a few articles about oil starvation when researching this question. I always thought my 51050 filter was odd in that it didn't seem to have enough holes for the oil to flow freely. I think this agrees with Glenn in that if you had a full flow filter with lots of holes you could not build oil pressure. This is the top of the Wix spin on that is mounted horizontal in my 70 F134. You can see only two small holes where on most filters you would have larger holes around the threaded center.

So I don't know my point here as I forgot where I was going so maybe this makes cents to someone.

Well maybe I have seen the small hole in the center of the canister "pipe?" and read someone drilled it out to get more oil flow because more is better? Sorry

My research shows Jeep part number 936407 for the horizontal filter.
When you cross that, you get this:

Donaldson P550050 Spin On Bypass Lube Filter | eBay

It shows the 2 small holes.

The oil jet I referred to is under the timing cover. The original one had an orifice that was too large and apparently at times starved the front crank bearing. Thus they came out with a jet with a smaller orifice and also offered it as a retrofit. Also the oil canister, by design restricted oil flow and didn't cause starvation.

It's interesting to see that they kept a source of restriction with the spin on filter in the filter design itself.

That one sure is expensive. $9.50 plus $14.06 shipping. I was grumbling at O'Reilly for their $12.99 price. Oh well.....

I did find this one on Amazon. It's cheaper but what a photo.

Nope just an air chuck the build includes a Viair 400C compressor mounted on the frame rail across from the starter. I also have a chuck up under the pass side dash and then another in my trailer connection panel above the rear cross member and below the rear valance panel. This way a nice Truck cab style coiled air hose can reach the whole jeep. And the one in the rear will also be able to charge up my small air tank in my Off road trailer that will push water and blow dust out of the trailer interior.

Once a Quarter NAPA has a sale on oil filters I bought 10) 1074 filters the same as a 1050 but holds more oil almost a full quart. Its the proper Bypass style. I think I paid something like $8.50 ea. As to a Filter costing a lot. With the near 16000.00 I have in my build the cost of the oil changes once its on the road is of no concern. I'm also going to be using Lucas Hot Rod and Classic oil again not cheap but then I want to protect my investment.

Oil filters and Oil filters, I am so confused now, there has been a lot said about the oil system and the filter systems on F134's that I just use what you guys are using the 50150 on my factory all stock motor, and it carries around 40 psi warm. When I bought the NOS F 143 from a friend he told me about the oil filter not filtering all the oil, so I decided to make my new motor full flow oil filter by drilling into the oil pump and installing a 1/4" pipe outlet out the side of the oil pump, and blocking the oil passage into the block and drilling and taping into the oil gallery directly. The oil now comes out of the oil pump, through the oil filter and back into the block. I used a after market oil filter mount for a Ford oil filter, so on that motor I used the Ford filter and my oil pressure was too low and took too long to build pressure. I moved the filter closer to the oil pump, and shortened the oil lines, it is now on the firewall below the steering shaft close to the oil pump that helped fix my problem of taking too long to build up oil pressure, but my used factory motor with the 50150 filter carries more oil pressure that my new motor, but I don't know if I should put the 50150 on the after market firewall mount bracket. I crank my motor with the ignition kill switch turned off until the oil light goes out, then turn on the switch and fire it up, just to make sure it has pressure. [IMG][IMG]

I wouldn't think a more restrictive oil filter would be desirable with the full flow system.

Does anyone have a recommendation for oil filter (canister style, in a vertical mount) that may be less (or more, I'm a little confused too) restrictive. I've finally got this engine buttoned up, I don't have the heart to do it again.

I use a Fram C3 or C3P or equivalent for the stock cartridge setup.

If you have the stock canister and stock filter you should be fine.

This all started because I bought a M38 with a L134. I am used to looking at the horizontal filter on the side of my F134 in my 70 DJ5.

So I didn't notice that there was NO oil filter on the M38 even though I had watched a video, driven to pick it up, spent the night and then drove home. Two days later I am looking at the oil filler tube because it is loose. My my grin fades to  when I see no filter, horizontal or canister, on the M38.

I decided to put a filter on the M38 but discovered the mounting is on the head bolts. In reading IRQVET's Motorboat thread there was some discussion on head bolts and studs. Not knowing any history on the engine in the M38 I was reluctant to remove and use the existing head bolts to mount the oil filter bracket for the canister.

SO... I thought - How about if I mount it horizontal like the F134? I did research looking for photos and write ups on oil filter mounting. This resulted in a lot of reading about the oil starvation/minimal filtering situation as well as different mods others had used for their oil filter. And then this post looking for part numbers and so on.

All that to say I think I am going to use something like CHUGALUG is using on my L134. It should work for me. Thanks for all the excitement.

Make sure where you mount it if you go vertical like I did it is not in the way of the front axle if it hits the rubber bumpers in a bounce. I had to move mine back from its original position once I put the engine in the chassis. A Horizontal mount would work fine. I just didn't want the mess when changing the filter.
