I currently have my trans and tc out. I'm not rebuilding anything, just replacing all the seals. There appears to be no paint on the tc and very little left on the trans.

Is it necessary to paint them or can I keep running them as they are?

Not saying its the best way to go, but when I rebuilt mine - I did not paint them. Mine were so covered in oil and grease and grime, I would think to get the paint to stick - the case would really need to be tanked (and thus completely torn down and disassembled). Mine were in that condition for complete rebuild - so i probably should have - but in terms of function around here where we don't have that much rust/salt issue, its never been a problem that they were not painted - this is 5+ years ago. Besides, as soon as they started leaking again (and the RMS and the oil pump gasket) - it rust proofed them again. Of course, at this point it would be a lot work to pull them just to paint them so it ain't happening.

I like to clean mine real good and at least primer them and put a seal coat over the primer. It makes it easier to get the mud and stuff off later. Good Luck

I paint everything that I can. Even with poor prep, it will last longer with paint than not.

Hopefully I can get it all back together this weekend. Think I'll take the timgr route. It's mostly clean with little prep. I have some old engine paint I'll coat it with.

You can Clean it with Brake Cleaner and get all the oil and grease off so the paint will stick to the castings better. Good luck

Personally I don't like drivetrain parts painted in colors...black looks OK. Lately I've been using VHT cast iron paint. It's a high temp paint that mimics the look of clean cast iron.

Other than looks, I see no reason to paint a transmission. I have never seen an old transmission that has rusted through..
    Just my opinion.
