I mix and matched axle shaft assemblies with this exact axle. The one I used is a 1974. I converted it to GM disk with 77 thick jeep disks and disk hubs with disk spindles. It works fine.

yes, that is a possible route to go, but i prefer to keep my 11" drums and its just a ton more money that i could avoid spending if i could just find a lousy sheet metal shield..... i know in the thread you linked up you already had the disk setup, so making that move made perfect sense for you.

Yeah, it did and it was significantly cheaper than sourcing the 11" backers and all the parts. If you already have them, then it's fine. They work well. If you get the proper measurements, why not make them? .. That is, if the other kinds don't work.

yeah, that's what i said earlier - i will probably talk to a machinist friend of mine and see about just having them made if my search continues to come up empty.
i already have all the 11" brake components and call me crazy, but i like the 11" drums on these jeeps.

yes, not uncommon for the tube side (inner axle shaft) to be missing the slinger/shield. the inner shield is small and rots away in a lot if instances. It keeps krud out of the axle tube (at least that's the idea) and a lot of times it isn't even replaced, even though it is cheap and readily available. No real harm in not running it as there is a true seal at the differential.

But the outer axle shaft (knuckle side) shield that I am looking for is critical. it protects the spindle bearings and a seal rides on it as well. Not running this shield would cause issues pretty quickly.

Anyway, reality is setting in and i'm expecting not to find this outer shield. I have the original shields. They are banged up, twisted, and a chunk or 2 is missing. I think between some heat, a hammer, and my press i can get them back into shape. I will then build up some weld on the missing chunks and then chuck it up in the lathe and turn down the welds. then a quick polish where the seal rides. its my best option at this point and should only be a couple hours work.....
