Hi folks... need to swap out my carb. Still having some fuel starving issues I think.:banghead: At higher speeds (40 and above) the jeep wants to shut down like it's starving for gas. Traced out the fuel lines.... haven't droppped and flushed the tank yet. Hoping I don't have to. Had a similar issue before on a 258 and the carb was pretty much worn out.

The motor is the 4 cyl GM iron duke... Omix or Weber carb to replace the original? The Weber is much more affordable even though it's not cheap.

    Any suggestions? Thanks!

I think I would check any inline or in tank filters first, Then check fuel pump pressures and pump volume. then look at carb last. Most carbs don't just wear out, they get gummed up from aged or dirty fuel. Most carbs can be cleaned and repaired. The only thing I can think of that will wear out on a carb is the butterfly shaft and bore. that usually only causes idle and low throttle issues though. Also might be a bad power valve if your carb has one. Good luck

    Year?

The TSM gives a spec for the pressure that the fuel pump should deliver. Aftermarket vacuum gauges for tune-ups test fuel pressure too. Cheap. I would also test volume, directing fuel pump output into a jar to while cranking see how much volume is available. Careful of fire and that the engine does not start if you try this.

Carbs do wear out. The base metal of the body wears away around the throttle shaft and they leak air. This can make them impossible to keep at a steady idle.

Don't know much about the carburetor for this engine, but if rebuilding it is beyond you, there are professional carburetor shops that typically do a careful and effective job on worn-out units. They can put bushings in the body to restore like-new operation. Check with the local car clubs in your area for recommendations.

You have to have a good and steady supply of fuel regardless of what carburetor you want to put on.
You must insure no restrictions in the fuel line.
This carburetor does have a small fuel filter at the carburetor fuel inlet; have you checked/replaced it ?

Drop and flush the tank. Been there.. My 75 was doing this and at times would just die. I siphoned the fuel out prior to dropping the tank. Used a clear hose. Towards the end a large bunch of yucky looking stuff came out. Dropped and cleaned the tank, replaced the in tank sock, replaced the filter, blew out the fuel lines. Replaced the hoses and problem solved.

I agree with the clean up the whole fuel system plan, clean and rebuild the original carb or get a reman. It's designed to work with that engine. I know only two people who have Weber carbs, and both are constantly fiddling around with them, trying to keep them running right. My son's AMC eagle has the iron duke and the factory carb works well. We did just change the fuel pump, as it was feeling pretty weak, even for the iron Duke. Between the pump and some drygas when it was cold outside, it now runs great again.

I would definitely drop tank and check and clean or replace pick up tube filter attached to sending unit I have seen this be the main issue

Lots of great advice I appreciate it. Picked up a filter for the carb... gonna change that and start to drop and clean the tank. I'll keep everyone posted.
