    Hey everyone -

Recently purchased a '71 CJ5. My twin brother bought a '75 CJ5 last summer so I followed suit by buying my own.

I don't have any history on it except that it was "restored" in the past by one of the previous owners.

We've not done much to it since it arrived - we worked on the steering (lots of play), lubed up several components and I'm preparing to do a fluid change on the transfer case and transmission.

With it being the last year of the early CJ5s and different from my brother's intermediate CJ5, I have a bunch of questions. I think I've determined that I have the T14 Transmission and Dana T18 Single Stick Transfer Case. Sound about right for a '71?

    Here is my ID plate:

First question - seats. I'd like to get some original seats and do the re-cover process - it's something I enjoy doing and I've read about where to source decent covers. But I need to start with good seats. My passenger seat is on a fixed bracket - which I believe is wrong. I think I'm supposed to have the fold and tumble seat and a bracket from '67-71 or thereabouts. I'm bidding on a set of brackets right now on eBay - which will solve that portion of the problem. Based on the pictures of my seats below - do either look factory correct? Neither fold, so I'm hoping one is at least correct for me to use on the driver's side.

I then need to find a factory folding passenger seat. Currently looking at this one on eBay - does it appear this is what I need? I'm not paying $450 for a passenger seat, but curious to know if this is the right one.

Second question - steering wheel. I had this aftermarket steering wheel - which because of the size made it easy to get in and out, but I don't like the look. It was held on by a nut. I bought a Crown reproduction and tried putting it on the other day but it doesn't fit down far enough for the nut to thread on. Am I doing something wrong?

Last question - I have a set of four holes on the rear quarter panel on both sides. Wonder if a factory piece was here originally, or was this for some bit of aftermarket addition.

Any help on any of these questions would be greatly appreciated!

The holes in the sides look like a cb antenna mount to me. The four holes with the caps on the passenger side are where a factory spare tire mount goes.

Maybe able to help with seats & hardware. Sent a message. I think.

seats look factory . as to passenger seat . the one on mine doesn't fold . but will tilt forward enough to get into tool box
you might be missing part that bolts to seat , the hinge part . drivers seat mount is homemade
there's a seller on ebay that sells reupholster kit for the low back seats
looks like a nice jeep project . yep you'll find a few differences . from your twins jeep :D
one of the other guys will chime in on your steering wheel problem

That would be correct for OEM - things do get changed by PO's, but looking at your transmission tunnel cover, it looks exactly like mine with T14 and D18

The tail lights and backup lights are the right style, but things have been moved. The backup lights should be both the same distance from the top of the tub. The gas filler should come out the back, where the reflectors are. Likely that was moved so they could fill the fuel with whatever rack was on the back was in-place.

As you noted, the passenger seat should fold and tumble. The driver's seat bracket is home-made. If you're brother's '75 is original, seating should be like the '75 except for the position of the driver's seat. From '72 through '75, the driver's seat is more outboard than yours. The passenger's seat looks more Jeep-like than the driver's seat. In '71, the vinyl should have had a contrasting panel in the center. Both have been recovered.

If you look for pictures of Jeep seats, there were early seats, where the frame was part of the seat. Then there were buckets, which were unchanged in shape from the mid 60s through 1975. Vinyl pattern changes , but the shape and mounting is pretty much the same. In '76 everything changes. There is also a 2/3-1/3 bench seat that appeared for the whole CJ run AFAIK.

As far as the steering wheel I'm wondering if some of the threads were cut off when that other wheel was put on. The end of the shaft looks kinda messed up to me.

I think you’re right. I just went out and looked at it again and it looks like it’s been cut.
