Yeah, I think it’s a fuel issue. But I took the top off of the carburetor and the needle doesn’t seem stuck, and I checked and gas is coming up from the pump. I’m clueless!

With the carb bowl full, look down the throat of the carb and pump the accelerator a couple of times.
You should see gas spray each time. If not you need to soak and clean all passages and possibly
    replace the pump in carb.

Did the fuel bowl have gas in it? If so how much?

So then, gas was coming out of the line at the carb?

Full as in all the way to the top? If so it is probably flooding out and dying because of that. Of course since you say it will start if you put gas in the carb it probably isn't flooding. Is your carb a Carter YF?

Yes, it is. And sorry I think I misunderstood, it was about half way up when I took it off I believe.

Certainly should run and stay running with that amount of fuel then.

Realize the focus is fuel I'd also check to be sure the vacuum lines are all fitted tightly and the carb to intake gasket is holding tight.
One other elect item to check is the ignition switch it-self. On older vehicles bad contacts or crud can cause cutting out as the engine starts and the switch transitions from start to run contacts. A quick verification can be done by keeping fingers on key and as it starts rotate key to the run position and wiggle it slightly.
Testing the run contact can also be done with a test light or ohm meter as well without the engine going through the start and run positions.

If you're working on the carb are you following the FSM?

Yes. I didn’t really change anything, the float is set correctly I believe and I just sprayed it down with carb cleaner and let it sit.

Okay! I’ll try that. But yeah I think it’s fuel since it’ll run when someone’s pouring it down the throat.

I would think so! There’s fuel in the tank, fuel in the pump, fuel in the carb, and it still won’t run. I’m completely lost.

Well, that is important information, which I don't think we had before.

Is it possible you have a vacuum leak? Carb gasket?

And "fuel in the carb" is no guarantee of anything, if the fuel/air mix is not correct - for instance if the float level is incorrect.

Any diagnosis needs to be logic-driven, and that is futile until all tune up specifications are first known to be correct.

Fuel in the carb doesn't mean it will run, but it rules out the question of "is fuel getting to the carb". One less hurdle.

Please describe exactly how it runs....good, smooth, misses, rough, backfires? Can you control it with the throttle? Will it rev? Will it idle? If it sits for hours have you been able to start it normally? Do you use the choke?

I don’t think that there is a vacuum leak. It’s a pretty new gasket. I have the oil bath air cleaner off so none of the hoses are hooked up, but that wouldn’t cause a vacuum leak would it?
