Not really an intermediate but, My brother is working on a 79 cj5. His plan is to buy a complete MDJ body kit. His steering column is not in good condition, and looking for something to replace it with. An ad in the local trade paper reads, 77-87 fullsize Jeep Wagoneer/ Cherokee parts for sale. Listed were 2 tilt columns among other parts. How close is that to a bolt in swap? He is a long way from being ready for this. Just trying to help a brother out.
    TIA

Can't say but a friend of mine had a 79 -5 and a gm tilt column was a direct bolt in, plugs and all.

No 1st hand experience, but I have never heard of any direct compatibility between the CJ and Wagoneer columns. They are both GM columns ('76 or later CJ) so the switches, electrical, etc. components are the same. The main concern would be the length - if they are the same length, it should fit. Kinda doubt they are compatible though. Supposedly the XJ column works in a Wagoneer - if you search the Wagoneer forums you'll probably find some mention. Then you could try to match the XJ column to the CJ, which seems more likely to have been tried.

older than 95 general motors around then they switched to a square column. the grand am ,buick skylark body had a short tilt wheel, the Bonneville, lesabre was short as well and as already shown camaro and firebird was a short one too.

    Thanks Guys
I'll pass the info on to my brother.
I think his jeep might be a Renegade. Factory clock, factory tach. Are there any specific traits of that for a 79?
