    Hello,

This is my 1967 Jeep that I inherited from my dad. I would like to get it running but will need a lot of help. The hardtop is junk and makes the whole thing look bad.

I know I need a carb and a alternator mount, and the wires are a disaster.

My dad did a lot of work to it in the late 90s but I believe he threw in the towel upon discovering the wrong carb and a couple cracks causing a fuel leak.

I finally have it parked in my shop. Here are a few pics hopefully I post them correctly:

Welcome from the other side of the mountains!
Your carb looks like one off a Commando....same as a CJ carb, but with an auto choke. It would probably work but you'd have to convert it to manual choke. Are all the parts there? It looks partially disassembled.

Looks like a good start to me! Some of the parts you need are fairly simple to acquire.

I'm with Focker, that top may grow on you!

    By the way welcome!

+1 Some folks really like those tops and that one doesn't look that bad.

From what I can see in these pics you have a pretty nice jeep. I would spend a great deal of time on this site and put it back together. These jeeps are not that hard to take apart and put back together the way they looked new. Just takes some talent and lotsa money. J.E.E.P just emtpty every pocket.

Yeah, the top just looks rusty to me. Completeness is a big selling point with these tops. No broken glass, no big dents ... I'm not a fan of the steel cabs, but some people really like them, whether for the weather protection or security of a locking cab. If you don't like it, you could hang onto it and it may be a major selling point to some future owner.

The original 2GV carb is not a rare item, AFAIK. However, you don't have to run the original carburetor. Some have had good results from the Motorocraft 2100 or 2150 2V carb. Or a replacement manifold and the Holley 390 cfm 4V. Or throttle body fuel injection. Lots of discussion of this in old posts if you search.

Not sure what's missing re the "alternator mount." Maybe back off the camera a bit and we can see what you are pointing to with more of its surroundings?

Looks like the outer ear of the alternator mount is broken, they are available either used or new (TA performance for new)

Nice Jeep! I say keep the hardtop too. But I'm biased:

It does come off in the summer time though.

If you don't want it, be sure to keep all the parts together and sell it. Someone will want it.

Both Ironlung and Fireball have sweet jeeps. Now to be perfectly honest with you Ironlung, you need to give me that hardtop before the rust on it moves down onto the jeep. I will be in Craig Colorado Nov 7th for 3rd season deer hunting, I can take it off your hands then. Rust is like a cancer it just keeps spreading.

Your Jeep looks like a very solid starting point! Though your hardtop doesn't look great, it still looks solid with just surface rust. Consider keeping it! If nothing else, that top has preserved most of the body from getting rusty.
Also, great looking early GTI. I still have an '83 Scirocco I bought new.

I'll mirror what others say; your jeep looks like a great starting point, and is a very easy vehicle to work on. Also, while some people don't like the hard tops, you can't beat them in winter!

    Ironlung,
I have had one with a broken ear exactly like yours, tig welded the piece back on, good as new! Even if you don't have the piece it isn't that hard to make a new piece from aluminum and weld it on, too many people today think if you can't buy it at a Parts store, something can't be fixed. There will be some on here that will tell you that you need a full blown CNC machine shop, computerized alignment equipment, and several engineers to fix something like this, not necessarily true.

Send me your address and I will send you an original unbroken alternator mount.

If you have deep pockets new carbs are listed on eBay for $327, recently I have seen some that were less expensive. I have no connection with any of these vendors. If you have a carb rebuild shop anywhere near you can probably find any parts you need as well as rebuild kits, don't waste your time with parts stores, go to a shop that works on carburetors exclusively, tons of them on the web if you can't find what you need locally.

I have a carb off a parts engine I can send you also, I can't say for sure if it original equipment or not and I am reasonably sure it will need a kit at the least.

Hang on to that hardtop! I haven't seen it mentioned in this thread, but, your doors have the bottoms extended rearward to cover the gas filler neck, an added security feature, keys and locks are available from the original manufacturer inexpensively.

Send me your address and I will send you an original unbroken alternator mount. and carb, if interested . Good luck!

Dang - I grew up in Craig - on Sandrock Drive at the top of Taylor Street... we built that house :)

All fixable and lots of smart folks here who can walk you though it. I might even stop by one day when I go back up to see my cousin that still lives in Craig.

PM me if you want - depending on how far back your family goes in the area I might know the Jeep, it kinda looks familiar, but I can't place it.

I'd stick the carburetor you have on it and get it running..choke is over rated anyways.
No need to dump cash on a carburetor till you get it running right.

Nobody's mentioned your wiring. Lots of threads on here about which new harness to get, and some say just repair what you have. I went with the EZ brand harness and have never looked back. Cost me about $250 and 8-12 hours of relatively straightforward circuit-by-circuit replacing of what was there.

Welcome from Michigan, What great story, and a chance to finish your Dads Jeep. Very Cool. That looks like a great Jeep to start with. It is new enough that the parts can still be available, with a little searching, and you are in the right spot for help. I have learned to never throw anything away until you are done and are sure you don't need it. A lot of times you go back to the "Junk Pile", for one more piece, maybe just a bolt or screw, or to see exactly how it was before, so I keep everything just in case. The Carb is no big thing, it can be had. Like everyone says get it running so you know if it needs repair or a total re-build. As for the wiring, I started with a stock factory harness, never messed with. I thought it would be just fine, fact is, they aren't. The Factory harness is too basic, and too old school. I wish I had made a new harness when I done my Jeep. The Factory harness has in line fuses, no big deal I thought, but you have to find them when something blows to change a fuse. Then you will want to add things too, a modern radio, a winch, extra lights, and charging plugs, just to mention a few. If I do mine over I would put in a fuse box with at least ten fuses, mounted where you can easily see it, and work from there. I use Marine quality wire and equipment, because of the moister in a Jeep. Anyway Welcome to the site.
