I'm doing a steering conversion to the manual Saginaw, and a Dana 30 swap over winter...

The ARB or elocker sounds nice, but quite honestly the Dana 27 is is more than enough for the Jeeping I do. I cant see it ever breaking.
I think a stock dana 30 with locking hubs will suffice.

I ran a Lockrite for years in my D27. I abused it and it held up well. Once you get used to the characteristics they are hardly noticeable. I do like having the ARB. Not always on but there when I need it.

I had a Dana 30 and ARB in my TJ on 35s. It worked fantastic and I wheeled that Jeep.

I setup a TrueTrac in the drum brake Dana 30 in my A1. Won't help you much with a wheel in the air, but for mud, sand, hill climbs, etc. it's awesome. And doesn't make steering much more difficult than stock. And the open carrier and spider gear costs cover almost half what a Dana 30 3.54 and up TrueTrac costs.

Yes, a True Trac is about 1/2 the cost of an ARB, and there is no air pump or lines and wiring to run.

If you are upgrading from Drums to Discs, you will need to check on the residual pressure valve in your system. The easiest thing to do is swap to a modern master cylinder and proportioning valve, but it's not that hard to make your existing system work properly.

    now....about the axle U-joints.

Chris, in the link you posted to your dana 30 axle build, you stated that you:

bought u joints for axles and installed them
    spicer 5-260x

these are the kind with the clips on the inside of the yoke.

and you didnt have to change the driveshaft?
i thought the dana 27 had smaller Ujoints than the dan 30?
thought that meant id need a new driveshaft???

a picture is worth a thousand words, but there are a few thousand words, give or take, so its not all bad.

now, about those U joints you bought, did they work with the existing front driveshaft? i have the dana 18 Tcase, assuming when you did yours, thats what you had?

Do you mean the Ujoints for the axle shafts or the driveshaft from teh transfer case to the D30?

I used the 1310 spicer style on my driveshafts. Didnr mess with eh smaller one that comes on some V6 ones. It all works and with the SM420 too. As I recall the axle shaft u joins were a bit of a PITA, but I got it done. I also made a new front driveshaft a couple months ago. Ordered new slip yoke and fixed yoke, trued up some DOM on my lathe with eh correct OD/ID and welded it up. Its real easy to make a new front driveshaft. Doesn't have to be perfect.. As it is i had less than .003 runout over the length.

When I installed my SM465 I had to get new drivelines. They made the D27 1310. I am pretty sure the D18 already was. When I did the D30 I used 1310's.

So, my jeep was never put together with any of the parts i have. I made it out of several jeeps and the junk I had laying around. That being said, I just tried to make things universal, like U joints. I went with 1310 ones to use the same front and rear, unit I got a Woods one made..I seem to recall needing a new front yoke because the d30 splines are not the same as the d27 or 25 yokes i had, but they all used the same 1310 joints anyway. Pretty sure only difference from the 1310 joints are on the transfer case side of the V6 jeeps where they are smaller and more difficult to source.

the d27 yoke u joint is also smaller when the D18 u joint is smaller (v6 application). The driveshaft for the v6 has the same small joint on both ends.
