What Yj Springs To Get

My Jeep currently has 2-2.5 inches of lift. With 33 inch tires. Im gonna to be putting in a set of wagoneer Dana 44s. I'm gonna be outboarding the spring hangers and going yj springs. I want to run 35 inch tires. I will also be stretching the rear some.

I'm trying to figure out how much lift of spring and how long of shackle to get. I will be remaining sua.

Any help or advice from others would be greatly appreciated.

 

I prefer to keep my shackles as short as possible, usually 4" or so. Those don't help much with lift though.

I've got Waggy 44's, ~2.5ish inches of spring lift, 6 or 7 inch shackles and 33" BFG KM2's with no complaints. I would just get your spring perches welded up on the axles and then install your new axles with 35's, then you can better visualize or test how much spring/shackle lift you're going to need.

Edit: my fenders and tub are cut for clearance, with 35's and a stretch I'd imagine you'll have to do the same if you want to be able to flex out all the way. Body lift is an option too.

I read through Norcal69s build and there is good information there on how to set up spring and shackle angles.

I've been trying to figure out how much spring lift to get. He has 2.5 inch springs and only running 31s.

 

Here's a side shot. My front springs are pretty sagged haha, I'm planning on throwing another leaf in there, the back has good clearance though. The 350 weighs down the front a good bit. I'd take some more shots for you but it's in my carport with the rear driveshaft out and no fluid in the transfer case right now, fixing a leaky rear yoke.

The biggest factor to me regarding clearance is how much wider these axles are than the stock ones. They're still relatively narrow compared to modern cars (I fit easily in compact car spots) but for a CJ they're quite wide.

Yes. With the wagoneer d44s. I will figure final width with wheel offset.

 

Seems as though 2.5 inch springs may not be enough. I'm not a fan of long shackles. Will probably keep them around 4 inches.

 

I can't verify this because I don't know the track width of my old truck off the top of my head but with my Waggy D44's I feel like I can squeeze through even smaller gaps than I could with my Toyota Tacoma. The extra width over stock CJ track is nice for the stability it provides on side grades.

 

After doing a couple 2.5” lifts for 31’s and 33’s, I think you should probably go with 4” springs for 35’s. That way you could run short 4” shackles.

I run 35's on 4" lift springs. I ran the stock shackles, but replaced them with 6" shackles and the springs work better. The ride is just a lot more forgiving and it seems the springs can articulate better.

 

Do you have any side pictures of your setup?

 

From reading what you posted about shackle length in relation to spring movement, the shackles would probably need to be longer due to the higher arch of the 4 inch springs. Without having anything in hand to measure I'm not sure how much. I also don't want to feel lifted too high.

 

Back when I was building YJs there were multiple ways to go with leaf springs and only one best way which still holds true. Old Man Emu HD springs. They will give a YJ 3 inches of lift and super ride... better than the stock TJs at the time. I could easily run 33s by adding a 1 inch body lift. Since you are relocating your spring mounts you could add any additional height there. Stay away from shackle lifts.

I did the RR YJ conversion on my CJ6, I will be running 35's. I got the 3-3.5" medium OME kit. The SS are 34".

 

Do you know how long the shackles are that come with the kit?

It seems that everybody's pics of their RR setup shows shackles to point inward or straight up and down in relation to the center of the jeep. Either your springs are too short in relation to the spring hanger or the kit is manufactured wrong.

If your shackles point inward toward the center of your jeep, you run the risk of inversion, breaking or bending your springs. If they are straight up and down its gonna ride rough. They need to angle outward away from the centerline of your jeep to articulate properly.

The spring mounts need to move outward from the center of the jeep to attain this geometry.

600 bucks for the RR kit seems really high. Look at this parts supplier or similar Jeep YJ - RuffStuff Specialties
All you need is a welder. You need one anyway.

 

I can't recall, off the top of my head, I will go up and measure them, just give me a few minutes.

 

There is no weight in the Jeep as it sits, when I had the roll cage in, and weight on the front, the shackles had the correct angle. Also, the springs will relax once everything is said and done. My 71 had the same issue, when I put the new springs on, they relaxed and are now correct.
