I thought about what would happen if my clutch malfunctioned without brakes, and I decided against going any further. :)

    A few observations:

I’m not happy with the clutch. I could use less than half of the travel I have. Total engagement is in the first 2” of pedal travel. That’s getting redesigned for more travel and a softer push.

Steering is slow from the giant pump pulley, but I might just leave it alone. I sorta like it. It’s a polar opposite from my 3b that is twitchy.

I took it up our dirt road and flew over the washboards for a test. It was incredible. Total control, zero rattles or vibrations, and a firm but comfortable feel.

The only vibration or clearance issue I had was the air compressor hitting the cage when I’d lug the engine. I’ll grab a shorter belt to fix that by dropping the height of the compressor by just a hair.

I replaced the faulty brake line this evening; I should have the brakes bled in the morning for a road test.

I really like the lug-ability of this engine. A few times in that video, I dropped the clutch without touching the gas just to see if it would stall.

Thanks for all the kind words, it’s an awesome feeling to see this come to fruition.

While I was waiting for daylight, I moved the coil buckets down in their mounts for another inch of lift up front, and I installed the sway bar. It sits level now (at least it will with a full tank of gas).

Here’s the video you really wanted.

    Three disclaimers:

    1. I hate skinny bias ply swampers. They get stuck in their own shadow, and a stiff suspension only makes it worse. They’ve been sitting under this thing for years; they have crazy flat spots and were never balanced in the first place. I got a little death wobble at speed, and I contribute it 100% to the tires.

    2. There is still air in the brakes, so there is some funky pulling going on under hard braking.

    3. No comments on my hair. I am still growing out what’s left of the hair color from Halloween. It went from brown to copper. :poo:

I found the elusive air bubbles in the right rear line, took it out for a drive, and the brakes are FANTASTIC. On loose gravel, the rears lock up just a hair before the fronts. I think I'll try to find more aggressive front pads/less aggressive rear pads before I mess with valving. It stops on a dime with minimal effort on pavement without rear lockup.

I found a problem I'll need to address: the harmonic balancer is a mess and will need replaced. The crank pulley wobbles like crazy, and I think it is spinning inside the rubber and it's preventing me from timing the engine properly.

I threw its clothes back on for a glamour shot to see how it sits with the front lifted. Better. (Although I’ll be back in the same boat again if I put a winch up front.)
