I recall the white pointer/needle for the earlier gauges.
The Crown one, don't know if that's correct for the 73 gauge.
I'll bet that Crown one is SW also, the one that's "made in usa".
Old crown from 30+ years ago I would trust; they just bought closeouts and overstocks of OEM stuff.

yes sir, my 74 had orange/red pointers. That was on of the biggest difference between the orginial gauges and the new SWs

2-1/16" is the standard S&W gauge size since Hech was a Pup! Most after market manufactures followed that for years.........Auto Meter makes a small line also and then started the larger 2-5/8" gauges......which I like............want to see choices....go to the Auto Meter site.

The early Renegade's had gauges with black bezels. In 1971, there were also optional gauges that had chrome bezels. This is likely why the parts book shows 2 possibilities, it probably lists 1 kind for Renegade. I'd have to check the on the ranges, I have a 1971 dash with the optional gauges but it's over in storage.

Your linked pic of the 0-60 oil pressure gauge is mine, which I bought as NOS on eBay. They do come up for sale, but it's rare.

Lots of interesting stuff here and of course normal for jeep to just throw different things around back then. My alternator is the 55 amp which would then correlate to the 60-0-60 ammeter. I am going to just have to keep searching using both the jeep pn's and the sw pn's and maybe I will get lucky.

Both of these bezels are chrome. The Oil pressure is May of 69 and the Ammeter is Aug of 72. These both have the SW at the bottom so clearly were not the Jeep specific gauges. Would it be a terrible sin to use these two and black the bezel and open up and remove the SW? Or just black the bezels out and call it good as it bookends my 71?

The oil gauge on our ren II had been replaced with a chrome sw. w/logo. Desiring a oem look I sought a stock replacement new or used. Unobtanium.
So, I bought an earlier black unlighted, cut in windows, installed lens and carefully aligned the lamp bracket to allow light to illuminate the face. While not a 100% match the black bexel and face with no logo looks prety good.

Some odd trivia, for what its worth. My 73 Super Jeep had a black bezel oil pressure gauge in the dash. Looked original, and was the only black bezel on the dash. Never thought much of it until I saw a photo of another yellow Super Jeep dash with chrome bezels except the black oil pressure gauge.

Maybe both Jeeps had the gauges changed and both owners settled for black to save a buck. Or they were close on the assembly line when there was a shortage of chrome bezel oil pressure gauges. Dont know, and can never know if they came that way.

Don't know for sure on your 73, but back when mine was made, 71,everybody had a lot of problems with the electrical oil gage and switched to mechanical gages. Was a pretty standard thing to do, I did mine for that reason. So that might have been the case in 73 also. But the amp gages always worked great. So I think you will find a lot of Jeeps from that time period with 2 different kind of gages.

I know this has been an idle topic for a few months but I was searching for replacement 2-1/16 Oil and Ammeter gauges for my '66 since my original SWs were both broken. SW makes ones that are very similar to the original style although not exact but at least they match each other and have black backgrounds, white lettering, and white pointers close enough to the OEM.

Oil Pressure Gauge #284AE is an electric gauge.
    Ammeter #284A is a 60-0-60.

    $40-50 each from Summit Racing

RE: problems with the mechanical gauge...
Merely my opinion but I haven't had an electrical gauge drip oil on my feet way out on a trail yet so I've taken the gamble of going back to electrical from the mechanical one that was on the dash when I got it. Weirdly, the engine had an electrical sender and a mechanical gauge was on the dash when I rescued the jeep from a field where it had been parked for 10-15 years. Neither worked at the time.

I purchased the Auto Meter 2-1/16" gauges for my 74 to replace the stock gauges. I did forget the stock bezels were chrome, and ordered black bezels. Because my 74 will never be a numbers matching restoration, I preferred the quality of Auto Meter. And I purposely chose electric gauges over mechanical for the same reason as Hones listed above.

Glad this resurfaced. I browsed ebay and scored a nos pre 72 black gauge in box. Interesting on the top edge of the gauge face (inside glass) is lettered Stewart Warner then some numbers and Made in USA. In the op picture above one can barely make out the lettering. It appears that it is obscured when viewing the gauge straight on.

I wouldn't throw any away though. There are specialists out there that rebuild gauges, and there is probably someone out there willing to go those lengths to run the originals!

I may have thrown one away recently from my 71 Ren II. After I took it out it floated around on my workbench for years. I think when I moved it didn't come with me.

I am still keeping up hope that I will find some original ones that I can have rebuilt here at a shop that specializes in the old stuff.

Rubicloak keep looking they do pop up occasionally. What I'm wondering is if the replacement part has whatever bug caused so many failures. I noticed the part numbers are similar, yet perhaps internals changed so that it works correctly. I'm planning on bench teating different sending units using air pressure to figure which should be used.

k, I received the gauge today, very nice, never had nuts on the threads so I'm believing it's nos.
    From the ad -
    "STEWART WARNER 428457
    MADE IN THE USA
    379L R9
    SW 556"

I can find other sw gauges with similar numbers 284L (elect ~ 90* sweep) and 284D (mechanical ~ 300* sweep) both Heavy Duty with 0-100 sweep. I wonder if the R9 is revision 9, the sender number or?
More research nets that the sender is unique as it requires different amperage range than 0-80 range gauges and the 60 psi was used on old military trucks and perhaps a few mid 60's gm products and likely the renegades. I also wonder if the 60 psi rating is what could have caused the high failure rate of the gauges, especially if amc used 80 range sending units. I believe I may source an m38 (military truck) sending unit, or perhaps the gm and mess around with it and an ohm meter. Oh, of course I will email stewart warner, whom I hope prooves a good source of info.
