Hey guys I was wondering if the early sm420 tower/top cover will work on a late model (ribbed). Thank for any input

It should. I have all the versions of the 420 and the tops look the same with the only difference being the very late ones with the reverse light switch.

I have a late sm420 that’s loose in the tower and I have a really early one that’s really tight. The late one has new gears and synchros so I want to swap the towers to prevent popping out of gear under compression.

You might check the side of the tower where the 2 pins are and check the grooves on each side of the shifter. The pins stick inside the tower and the grooves in the shifter slide down the pins. Wear can occur on both pins and the grooves become worn, causing a lot of slop. I have replaced the pins with bigger ones before and filed the grooves to fit the larger pin size to tighten things back up. This has worked for me twice now.

    FWIW,
    Mike

Can we get a picture of this, I want to see how the factory put the switch in.

    Thanks!

I don't have the very late one. Those are pretty hard to come by. I should have said with the exception of the very late one.
