I currently have a Turbo 400 in my CJ6. I would like to get the lower 1st gear plus the overdrive. The tolerances are tight with the front drive shaft. My question is the pan size on the 700r4/4l60 the same in width? I have been looking for the specs but have not been able to find that portion yet.

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,
    Jason

They are essentially the same transmission. I might have one near me if you want measurements of the pan.

I kind of figured they are the same. I'm going to talk with my Transmission guy later today, I am sure I can get measurements, was just hoping someone knew off hand.

Thank you for the offer, if I don't get over to the shop, I may hit you up.

700r4 only comes in a Chevy pattern so you'll need an engine adapter. No big deal TCI and TransDapt have them economically enough. Most of the D300 adapters have some ability to clock the case a little to help with pan clearance. Otherwise you can run a two piece shaft with a support bearing.

Edit: the 700 is a little over an inch shorter

I have the d18, and easy access to a 205 or 203 transfer case. It looks to me the big issue the how wide it is, and whether it interferes with the drive shaft.

    Current set up.

If it becomes an issue, there's always the 2-piece front driveshaft route.

A TH400 is noticably more "husky" than the 700r-4, and has little in common with the smaller 350/700r-4 other than the converter. The TH350 and 700r-4 are very close cousins, with the latter being essentially a 350 with a 4th gear. The 700r-4 later became the 4L60e when it became computer controlled. The 700r-4 also got a lock-up converter, and requires a tv cable that can be tedious to get adjusted correctly.
If I make it back down to the Keys tomorrow, I can measure the width of pans for both the 400 and 700r-4, but I think the 700r-4 pan is at least 5/8" wider than a TH400. The pans are very different shapes, and the nearly square 700 pan is wider than a 400 pan. I have shaved the edge of the pan rail on a 700r-4 to gain slightly more driveshft clearance.

Going back to your photo in post #5, width of the pan isn't your only issue. Thats a TH400 pictured, and its "Texas" shaped pan makes room for the u-joint. Mentioned above, the 700r-4 is a nearly square pan, and will interfere with the location of that u-joint. Some adapters between the trans and T/C are a little longer, making room for the U-Joint, so start looking at the whole picture.

@Keys5a I was referring to the 700r4/4l60 being the same.

With the 700r4 adapter the package winds up being longer then a 400. As Donny stated, it’s for clearance for the u-joint. The upside of this is the down angle of the driveshaft should clear the pan rail. You have a fair amount of lift?

I have about 3.5" of lift, RR YJ conversion spring under.

My question, is if the adapater moves the T/C back, then I run into another issue...Looks like I might want to go down a different path.

Just extend the linkage to put the shifter in the stock location. Mine still comes up through the original hole.

I was about to reply essentially the same thing. The linkage on a 300 can be extended forward almost anywhere you want it. Fabricate a bracket that extends the upper pivot, then use heimed rods to extend the shift shafts. I think there are some aftermarket kits that do this. I made a pair of nice stainless levers for one of my projects a few years ago.
