My jeep had the original vacuum wipers on it when I got it. I did a LOT of work on them Vacuum Wiper Repair Information but I could never get acceptable performance out of them. So I replaced them with electric wipers similar to what they used later on. I would think trying to operate that manual wiper while driving an old Jeep would be pretty difficult!

IIRC the arm length is shorter on the Cj5 version.

I actually like the manual wipers. More effective in heavy snow, etc.

i've got vacuum on the driver side and a manual like you picture on the pass side - both top mounted on my '56. It was that way when I bought the CJ5 two years ago. The manual, to me, has better contact with the windshield and as Pete says should move more water and snow more effectively (i'm also going to try to tighten the spring or get a new spring in the arm of my vacuum set up to get better contact with the glass). On the manual - the length of the arm from where it leaves the windshield frame to the blade is 6.5 inches on my set up. It works on the pass side, but could stand to be 1 - 1.5 inches longer for better cleaning/coverage of the glass. You can get some stock and extend the arm by welding in the desired length if you are so inclined (I did this on my 3A many years ago). You can also adjust the "spring" of this manual arm by gently bending the arm as needed at the flat portion.

Had the manual wiper on my '56 since new, but replaced the w/s frame for one with dual wipers.
As I'm a pack rat and saved the original, I'd have to look and see if there was a difference in the hole pattern for dual wipers vs the manual one.
That is, could you retrofit a hand wiper into the hole where a vac or electric wiper was??

Pretty sure that was the OEM set up for that year.

M38A1 had a different vacuum motor unit than the CJ5 for the driver side, and it had a very useful manual-assist handle.

Can't say about the passenger side, since mine had an 106mm anti-tank gun fitted instead of a wiper...

Does anyone sell the other piece? The cast piece that screws to the windshield frame that piece goes through?

My CJ5 has the manual arm. :p I might even have a spare.

The 2A/MB ones are shorter than 3A/B and CJ5 ones. You can weld a piece of rod in and make it the right length.

Here’s how the pass side manual wiper is mounted on my ‘56. As you can see the blade hits the windshield seal at the top so this might be a replacement unit where the arm is too short.

I have the same issue with mine not having enough pressure. I've tries everything to no availe. Seems to me like the actual spring in the new arms are not strong enough. But just a guess.

I bet that anti-tank gun works great on blasting the rain, but doesn't it make a lot of noise:shock:?:p

I don't have the gun ("recoiless rifle") itself, sadly.

But someone I know "tested" his with oxy-acetylene. He said it blew all the leaves off every tree in his yard, and he had some 'splaining to do when the cops arrived.
