Questions About Lug Nuts

    My tattered old heap came with a mixture of chrome, closed-end acorn style and plain open-end style lug nuts on all four wheels; a real mix and match. The previous owner(s) just used whatever he had on hand to replace a lost nut so I am looking into a whole new set of 20.

    I know the thread size is 1/2" x 20 and all mine are right-hand threads, so no issues there but ...

    1) What type was standard on a 1967-1968 CJ5?

    2) Was there a special type provided by an original equipment manufacturer?
    2a) What did they look like? If open-end, were they plain steel, zinc plated or chromed?

    3) Did they have a bevel on the base [and a specific bevel angle] to match the factory wheels?

    4) Regardless of style, type and being period correct, is there any advantage to closed-end versus open-end?

    I'm currently running this kind of wheel v v and hope whatever lug nuts I end up with will play happily with OEM style steelies if I decide to go original....

    All kinds of choices on that popular auction site, even black powder coated open-end or the most basic of types $10-$12 per 20.

    4. - Closed end nuts protect the end of the stud from dirt and corrosion.

    I just use stock lug nuts with wagon wheels :whistle:
    did have chrome ones for years . but they rust and flake

    Original lug nuts were just open-ended and lightly plated (zinc? Chromate?) and have a tapered end to fit the rim. As far as I know, all wheels use the same taper, except some alloys that use a shoulder style lug.
    I know I have some closed end chrome lugs that have to be pushing 40 years old that have no rust, even from Hatteras beaches. They just don't make 'em like they used to!
    As long as you have some lubrication on your studs, I think regular open end lugnuts are fine. I have been using CRC Marine Corrosion Inhibitor spray on things like these studs for the past 5 or so years, and I really like the results.

    Correct. The military nuts are different than civilian, at least on my Jeeps

    I like the bulge seat lug nuts....keeps the tire jockey at the tire store from banging my wheels up with his impact socket.
