179F1822-DEFF-48BE-970F-4AE58C4A3F98.jpeg I’m studying and learning, this week’s focus is on the fuel pump. My ‘63 has an “all metal” pump and my ‘58 has the glass bowl type. Are both types period correct, I like the “old school” looks of the glass bowl mechanical type. Is the glass bowl type worth rebuilding with the available kit? I’ve seen the same type, probably a modern knock off, available for less than $40. Also, it looks to me that the vacuum hose from the driver’s side windshield wiper just runs through the firewall and into a “tin can” mounted on the fender under the hood...what’s up with that ( on the ‘58)? Thanks, Ray

Does the metal pump have the integrated vaccum pump?

The can is (was?) probably a vac reservoir for going up hills when the manifold vacuum drops (despite the best efforts of the pump) enough that the wipers stall out.

Gotta be careful of the new glass globe fuel pumps.....bunch of us had issues with them falling apart (breaking).

F9E7AA6D-6610-4452-B085-7855CE6E9E75.jpeg Ok, home from work and had a chance to look at the ‘63’s non glass bowl, all metal, fuel pump and take a pic of it. Evidently “dual action” as the vacuum line attaches to it. The one on my ‘58 has the glass bowl and I really like the “looks” of it better. I got the rust rotted ‘58 to be a parts warehouse for my ‘63, so I’m thinking of using the ‘58’s fuel pump on the ‘63, but it might need a rebuild. I’m at the stage of most everything being new to me, so everything I do or learn with these jeeps is a “first” for me, ha. The ‘63 is a real original sweetheart. The ‘58 has a lot of body rust rot, but with some unique aspects, neat hubcaps, a vacuum reservoir (I think)... the differentials look a little different to me, maybe not as substantial as the ‘63’s, something else to figure out. Maybe I’ll step out, get a entry level welder, and see what I can do after a little research and practice. Thank God for this website and you guys! Ray

The rear diffs should be the same between the '58 and '63. The front on the '58 should be a D25, and the '63 may be a D27, or may be D25 too. '62/'63 is the transition period for adopting the D27.

My gut feeling is the vacuum can was added by someone as I don't think they had that in 58. But others may/will chime in.

I'm not sure when they did away with the glass bowl but would love to know.

I bought a new fuel pump The one with the glass bowl came, I questioned it because I have never seen a glass bowl up-side down. They told me that was the right one so I put it on. The problem was the inlet from the tank was in the front, and the outlet was on the back, making it had to plumb up. I took the top, glass bowl, off, and rotated it 180* and put it back on. Now the fuel line goes from the tank to the back of the fuel pump and the outlet is in the front, going the carb, makes it a lot easier to make gas lines. I don't need the vacuum pump I used electric wipers.

Nice! I'm going to try that. I have a '64 and there's no spacer between the block and the pump. Any idea if I need it, and will it increase or decrease fuel pressure?

    Thanks.

Some had the spacer some didn't, I know if there is one it is to align pump arm to the cam, as far as in and out, so if it has one I always put it back on. A friend had a Morgan Three Wheeler with a flat head four cylinder motor, someone else had put the motor in, the carb would boil over and flood the motor. I was looking in the parts box and saw a fuel pump spacer, I put the spacer in and problem solved. Without the spacer the fuel pump stroke was too long and it made too much pressure causing the float bowel to over flow and flood the motor. I hope this makes sense, Good Luck

Thanks, I've only had it a couple of weeks, and had to change the pump, no spacer on there. Seems to be fine without it. Definitely not flooding.

    I appreciate your response!
