I ordered a replacement pinion seal (Omix-Ada 16521.01) for the Dana 44 rear diff.
    Looks like this:

But after getting the dust shield/flange off, the current seal looks like this (not my diff...the image was taken from Google images):

The outer portion of the seal has a flat steel face that's flush with the housing.
Is this flat steel faced seal just another variation of a Dana 44 pinion seal (1st pic), or did I get the wrong seal?

You likely have the correct seal.
The existing one is built different with the seal sandwiched between a inner & outer shield, the replacement is a single layer of metal with the flexible sealing surface fused onto it. I have used several single layer built seals with acceptable results. The original style can likely still be had at several times the cost of the omix unit.

Inspect the pinion shaft for a groove that may be worn into it from the old seal.
Install the replacement seal with the garter spring towards the fluid side of the differential.

    Thanks for the reply.
That was my guess, and after looking at Morris, Walcks and other sites' referenced seal, they all looked like the Omix.
I went ahead and installed it without issue.

Can anyone help me out with some questions about my D44 pinion seal rebuild?

The oil slinger that came out is not flat like the replacement from KW - should I keep the old style or use the new (flat) one?

Another oddity is this ~1.5" washer that came out during teardown, which is not anywhere in the parts diagram: what is this for? Should it go back in?

When I put this all together the first time, I used the new red oil seal that came from KW. I added/removed shims until I got the rotational torque to ~18 in-lbs per metalshaper's video. But when I torqued the nut, the tall rubber outer crown on the new seal compressed into the yoke dust shield and the rotational torque was way back up to ~59 in-lbs - not acceptable. I'm wondering if the washer was added to move the yoke up 0.04" and get the dust shield off he seal rubber lip? Wouldn't adding that waster above the oil slinger affect the preload on the outer pinion bearings though?

So then I sourced a different brand seal at Napa that has a slightly smaller rubber crown, but it has some rubber/vinyl on the flat portion of the seal where it is supposed to mate with the gasket. Should I scrape this off or leave it and torque it down?

    Thanks!!
