I removed the Warn OD from the Dana 18, it feels tight, looks great in the planetary area, however, I found a small amount of metal flakes caught in the oil channel on the rear cap, fed by the oil scoop. This prompted me to go deeper. I pulled the cluster pin and sure enough, there is a slight amount of hardened material pulled off. I then removed cluster gear and found this AHCS sitting in the oil galley that feeds the cluster pin bearings, along with substantial damage to both thrust washers.
My question is, does anyone recognize this AHCS as belonging to a Warn OD? I cannot for the life of me find where it would go. Was orange paint on transmission and transfercase standard for 3rd quarter of 1968 mfg (where serial number puts mfg date)? The case has little to no wear on good area of cluster shaft, yokes have little to no seal wear and look factory. Gaskets are factory Victor Reinz. The only work I can tell that’s been done is the installation of a Warn OD.

The only thing I can think of for that in a Warn overdrive is the set-screw that holds the shift fork on the shift rail. Same with a D18 t-case, the only Allen heads are the shift fork set screws. From the Warn parts diagram...

Thanks. I’ll double check for that fork cap screw. Didn’t notice it missing, but that’s because I assumed they used a set screw. :poo:

Right, while they are Allen's, neither the Warn overdrive or the D18 shift fork set-screws are supposed to have a head on them as the clearances in the cases are fairly tight. If someone replaced a set-screw with an Allen head, quite likely the head stuck out far enough to hit the housing...and if shifted forceful enough, it would shear the head off. That's my best guess anyway.

Also keep in mind that since the transmission, t-case and overdrive share oil, damage in any one of the three is likely to deposit metal flakes in the overdrive. The way it is oiled from the little trough that scavenges off the planetary gear housing does get oil into the overdrive, but not very much "flow" there...just a trickle. Therefore, stuff goes in the overdrive, but doesn't really get "flushed" out.

I think Tim is on the right track...nothing like that allen screw cap in the transmission, TC or OD that I remember from my rebuilds.

Tore the body apart on the Warn OD. It has the original brass fork with a drift pin in it. It shifts like it should. I can’t think of anywhere that I have seen an AHCS in a Dana 18, this my assumption it came from the OD. Transmission looks clean internally. No metal of any kind, anywhere. Even the D18 looked clean upon initial inspection from PTO port and bottom cover.. until I found that metal in the OD oiling port. I will take the front/rear outputs down this evening and see if it’s from one of those shift rails, although it seems to be shifting like it should.
No damage to any teeth in the D18 or the OD of any kind that I could spot.

Yes 2 very small allen head bolts are a normal part of the Warn O.D. planetary assembly.
The 2 small allen heads hold the thrust plate onto the bowl gear assembly.
Those small bolts are often found to be loose.
I carefully snug then down as tight as possible without breaking them off.

Good call Ken, I forgot about those little guys as it has been awhile since I have been into one. For reference, they are on the extreme far right of this diagram...

Looks like those are still hanging in there. Think I might pull one and compare to remanent ahcs. I spent a few hours on the Saturn bench years ago, but not enough to know these things well enough.
