Thank you. I'll credit the quality to Samsung Galaxy.

    I have a torque wrench, btw... 20190803_111851_resized.jpg 20190803_111851_resized.jpg

I've never used it. But I've loaned it out. And sometimes I've been told it's too big for their job...so I might need a smaller, and cheaper one.

I know it's required on heads. That's what I've loaned my wrench for. I've just never heard it used on other things. But in that manual you posted the link to it has torque specs.

Are those pics good enough to decide if you think Chilly's pulleys will work? I've got to go down to the high school for a bit and help the auto shop teacher get the tool room ready for school. (repayment for him letting me use the rack and steam cleaner to fix a couple things on my blazer)

My '72 TSM says 10-15 ft-lbs for the water pump. That's not a lot: 10 to 15 pounds at the end of a foot-long lever. You have a fairly small bolt into a threaded hole, possibly in aluminum. My mechanic friend would not have measured torque, but he had years of experience at how tight these bolts should be (and he needed to go fast). I have done this job without measuring torque, though now that the spec has been pointed out, I probably would measure. Plus I have a couple of torque wrenches to choose from.

Barring that, if you use a 6" ratchet handle, that's 20-30 lbs on the end. Get your bathroom scale, push on it and see what 30 lbs of pressure is like, and copy that. Probably accurate enough for this.

What's the minimum setting on your torque wrench? Typically they are most accurate in the middle of their range. A long handle like that would suggest it's for something like cylinder head cap screws, at 80-85 ft-lbs.

Interesting the alternator bracket bolt is 18-35 ft-lbs and the alternator to bracket nut is 30-35. So get that adjuster bolt nut good and tight. Plus there's no great penalty if you break or strip the alternator mounting bolts - just get a new one. The bracket bolts go into the block, and stripping one of those would be bad. So tighten enough to squash the lock washer, a little more and no further.

I would take the pulley off, set it down flat on a table and measure the overall height with a tape like you did earlier for the hub height. Same for the crank pulley. Compare notes then.

Is the crank pulley the one under the one that goes on the water pump?

+1 - yes, it's on the crankshaft end, aka "crank."

While I have heard the word "crankshaft" a million times, I don't actually know what or where it is...
But that's ok. If I get too much new information I'll probably get overwhelmed and forget half of it .
I'm willing to accept that it is what you say.

Plus if I picture a cranksaft, I see someone from the early 1900's turning a handle to crank their car.

You have the right idea. Just like a crank turns up and down motion into rotary motion, the crankshaft turns the up and down motion of the pistons into rotation.

That would be "the crank" not the "crankshaft."

But it acts as a temporary extension of the actual crankshaft and performs the same function - only using muscle, not gasoline.

2-3/4" overall height. Candace, measure yours and let us know.

How do I get that big bolt thing in the middle undone? it just wants to turn the pulley... 20190805_123356_resized.jpg

put the bolts back in and hold the pully with a strap wrench. an old v belt wrapped around a solid object can substitute for a strap wrench.

Are you measuring that pulley with three small bolts and one big one in the center? That's the crank pulley. Please measure the smaller pulley that was on your water pump.

Ok, so yours is 3/8" shorter, just about making up for your pump's shorter hub height. I think your later model pump should work OK with my later pulley. I'll mail it tomorrow.

What would happen if I put spacers behind my bottom pulley to bring it out even with the one on the water pump?
The alternator already had a spacer behind it and the pump came with two sizes of spacers. So the alternator would need the longer one instead of the short one that's on there now. And I already have some here I could use for the pulley...
