Ok...I feel like I remember some discussion of using 11" front backing plate on a rear D44 with a bit of modification. Think this was something Daryl had discussed. I don't know if the plates are from a D30 or a D44, and not sure that it matters. I know the front plates do not accommodate a parking brake cable, but not an issue for me. Thanks for the insight...

The only difference I'm aware of is the parking brake cable recess. No need to adapt if you don't need the cable.

Someone may have added the recess to some fronts? Maybe you are remembering that.

After some searching, I think I found what I was remembering...a flanged D44 has a different hole pattern than the earlier tapered D44...so some mounting holes may be needed depending on that....otherwise most any 11" D30/D44 backing plate is usable whether front or rear (assuming no need for the rear parking brake cable).

I used the 11" backing plates and the drums off a 72 Dana 30 for the rear 44 in my jeep. I did change the wheel cylinders to the correct ones for rear 11" brakes. Works well. I now have a set of 11" that I'm going to install in their place that have the provisions for the e-brake and eliminate the e-brake off transfer case. Just about have all the parts for this.
