took my PCV valve out in relation to another post several are helping me with.
It was wet and oily so I cleaned it but I see that with the spring inside the cone can’t rattle anyways.
Looking closer I see the hole in the end of the steel cone inside is restricted with what looks like brass or copper. The hole is restricted by half. Should I open that up or is supposed to be like that.

Good Question, I have wondered about that thing myself, I can't help you, but am wanting to know more about them myself. Both of my motors run good, both have the PCV on them, one on the side cover, one on the intake manifold, both rattled after cleaning, so I didn't take them apart to look inside. Good Luck.

Is there supposed to be a baffle behind the “bell” that attaches to the side cover?

The PVC flow is supposed to be restricted, it is a controlled flow.

Soak the PCV in carb cleaner over night and then wash out with water and blow it dry with comp air. Shake valve and may hear the ball inside rattle and may not. The valve is a controller (one way valve) so you should be able to suck air thru one way but not blow thru it.

Try unscrewing it and take it apart to clean. I tried the soaking and it still dripped black with spraying carb cleaner. When I finally took it apart it cleaned good. Just pay attention on how it goes back together.

No, they're a little metal assembly that's meant to be serviced.

—I’ve taken it apart and cleaned with carb cleaner.
—The steel cone that rests inside the spring has a small hole in the top. That hole also has what looks like brass or copper restricting it down to about 1/2 the size. It appears like it was placed there after manufacturing because it’s not a symmetrical hole.
—I have another PCV I took off a bunch of yrs ago. I opened that one up and the metal cone has the small hole but no restriction cutting it down.
    —Neither one rattles when shaken.
—They both appear to put tension on the spring housing the steel cone when screwed together. I don’t see how that cone can “rattle” when shaken.
—I’ll have to try the suction test on them and see what is getting by.
—I know the one I just took off is letting oil by it all the way up to intake manifold.
—what about a catch can between PCV and intake mnifold?

—I also noticed I did not have the cone shaped baffle installed with my PCV.
—I got a baffle with my downdraft tube and will use that when I reinstall PCV valve.
—I’m going to try the down tube to see how it runs.
—VAC gauge readings are the same with down tube as with PCV.
    —Still smoking badly.
—Hopefully I can put some miles on it tomorrow to see if cleans out.
    —Thanks for the help.
