Installed a new throttle cable. Then the step on the passenger side.

I’ve been putting off working on the brakes. I have a very similar problem as Dan in another thread. The push rod is only going about 1/2” into the MC. Then hard stop. I’m going to remove MC next week and kind of start over. Going camping and riding MTB for the weekend starting tomorrow.

Managed putting off working on brakes another day.

My son was over for dinner so I got him to give me a hand in the garage.
    Installed Jerrycan hanger.

New brake cylinders on the rear 11” brakes seemed to fix the problem with the pedal only moving about half way down.

I was also able to lower the drivers seat about 3/4”. By moving the bracket under original seat bracket instead of on top.

Cleaned out the interior of wire trimmings and drill/grinder shavings. Wiped down with some mineral spirits thinking of spraying some paint or Bed liner on the bolt heads and scratches.

Drove around a bit yesterday. Here’s the short list of issues. I’m sure there will be lots more.
-Overheating. New radiator, new water pump, new thermostat. No fan shroud. Not sure what’s left except doing a good flush.
    - need choke cable set up. Runs better after a few minutes. Adjusted timing better tonight so maybe helpful.
-temp gauge not working. So I don’t really know how bad overheating is. I bought a new Auto-meter gauge to match oil and volt gauges. Not going to bother with the gauge on speedo.
-front hubs don’t unlock. I know nothing about hubs so I’ll take them apart and start a new thread in the next week or so.
-Darting and wandering around- my caster seems to be 5* so I don’t think it’s way off. I’ll have the alignment shop check it.
    - passenger side mirror useless. Not sure how I’ll fix it.
-leaking a little oil here and there.
    - brakes definitely need something. I’ve bled and bled but I can’t get the front to lock up even standing on the pedal.

Even with all the issues I’m really happy with the Jeep. We drove over to a little sandy hole in my neighborhood and couldn’t get stuck even a little.:bananatool::D:clap::rofl:

Any input is welcome anytime. Especially now I'm working on problems not just building this thing.

I'm mostly worried about the overheating issue. I have new pump, radiator, hoses and thermostat. What else is there? I took out the thermostat and added a bottle of flush mix stuff to the system. Driving to work today it seemed better without the thermostat. I'll drain and refill this afternoon. Maybe just to much rust inside engine from sitting for 10+ years.

Here is the problem front hub.

I may have found the easy fix to the problem of the hubs not unlocking. Seems like the spring was on the wrong side of the locking gear. Spring was the first thing under the cover and holding the locking gear into 4wd. after removing the cover this is what I found...

The locking gear has this recessed ridge on one side. Seems like maybe the spring should fit into there but it didn't??

I put the spring behind the gear, put the clip back on, bolted it back together and it seems to work correctly now.
How much grease/lube should be inside these hubs? It's not clean inside but not much of any lube present.

I quit using conventional grease in the hubs. It just gets too thick and hard over time and in the cold. I've been using a spray can of white lithium grease. It's been doing the trick for me. YMMV

As far as the overheating goes... by overheating, do you mean boiling over?

Is this at idle, or going down the road, or both?

It wasn't clear if you got a temp gauge working? That should be step one. If it's boiling over before it's up to temp, you could have an air pocket in the coolant, a cracked or scored cylinder, leaking head gasket...

If its temp is rising steadily and doesn't stop until it boils, it could be timing, faulty thermostat, running overly lean, or if it's only while parked, insufficient air draw (shroud).

X2 on shroud I prefer a clutch fan as well.

I didn’t fix the temp gauge yet. It came in the mail today. It is getting hot on the road as well as at stop. So shroud should help but I’d think it would stay cool while driving without it. I’ve been checking the oil for signs of water but none apparent yet.

    We’re off

People like to debate this, but a shroud does nothing above ~30-35 mph. So if it's overheating at speed, a shroud isn't going to help much.

We were off camping for the weekend. Did a couple more cooling system flushes this evening with the OTC flush product. Then just ran engine with the hose in radiator until it ran clear. Put new coolant in so we shall see how she does tomorrow.

My limited experience is that once a radiator boils over, and especially more than once, it'll be scaled up to uselessness.

My Fhead was doing the same thing. I changed water pump, pulled the thermostat, changed antifreeze same thing boil over. I put in a brand new 3 row Aluminum radiator and runs nice and cool now.

Tough to find radiator shops anymore, so I took mine to a shop in Houston while visiting my dad. Guy took the tank off and many of the passages were blocked with scale. He cleaned it all out and re-soldered the tanks back on. I think it was about $100.

Long story short, your radiator may not be working like it should. A good shop can flow test it for you.

I’m knocking off the issues from my list.

-Overheating is much better. Several system flushes and a new gauge confirms that. Still have cowl to install.
-Darting steering is hopefully going to be solved with shims ordered from Mcruff.
-Adjusted mirror so I look thru the windshield to see the passenger side. (They say that is correct)
-The shop I brought the Jeep to last week got the brakes working well. Switched the lines off the MC, I had it wrong.

I hate to call it done but I've been driving it around for several weeks now. I'm sure a 53 year old Jeep will always have stuff to work on.

Missing something up front - I guess a winch is needed...

I tried to get it stuck but this deep sand is like nothing.

Its very rewarding to drive your completed project! Looks great. What's going on with your front shackle angle?

The shackles are definitely back rather than slightly forward. It's the YJ kit from Rocky Road. I guess the lift springs are just a little short. Hoping they flatten out a bit and move forward a bit. I'm not sure it has a large effect on jeep now. Drives and bumps pretty well.

Steve's RR kit is the same as yours, but his shackles are barley straight up and down after a year. If after the rubicon trip his angles aren't improved, we will be moving his main eye mounts. Pretty simple to redrill the holes and move it forward an inch. My concern for yours would be bending a leaf if you hit something.

Ouch! That wouldn't be good. For now, in Florida, not a lot I'm going to hit hard (except a curb at the mall). LOL.
