Robotics yes, just dropped off my oldest two kids at the airport today. They are headed to Houston for the robotics world finals. They just got back from a match in Canada two weeks ago. They aren't having the best year they have ever had but still qualified for worlds. They left a day early so they could get the robot out of the bag and install a bunch of redesigned components. Will be interesting to see how they do.

The only drawback is the bearings last longer than rotors, to replace rotors you gotta pull the axles carry on

Still spending my spare time at the motocross track with my youngest. A lady comes out and takes pictures during the Wednesday night sessions at the MX track, she got this cool pic of my son

@NeedsRusteze74 is making good progress on his Jeep and it somewhat inspired me to work on mine again. So I dug out the weld on disc brake brackets and finished cutting them out.

I drilled the holes in them and lined up my calipers on the rotors. I used my air compressor to add pressure in the caliper which clamped the brake pads down and ensured the caliper was located correctly side to side. Once everything was located correctly I tacked the brackets in place and got everything ready for needsrusteze74 to weld them on. That's his shoe in the pic below as he started looking at what he had to weld.

And they are welded and painted and back together. Worked out great, hopefully you guys don't notice some life threatening error... or, maybe I hope one doesn't go unnoticed :worry:

I think the next step is to get my locker and gears out of my old axle and installed into this one. Hopefully I can get the old axle apart, the left side wheel bearing got crazy hot and probably welded itself all together.

Yeh I think they are overkill... but more is always better. The calipers are off the front of a Ram 1500 truck and the rotors are off the front of a Suzuki Grand Vitara 7 or something like that. I have a spreadsheet that tracks where all the parts that make up my mutt of a Jeep are from, I'm getting too old to remember anymore.

In case you missed all the drama with getting my gears out of my old axle... and want some drama Is There A Trick To Getting Pinion Out Of Dana 44

And if you can't recall why I'm building the new axle, I blew out a wheel bearing on the tapered axle. Apparently the paper shims and correct end play is very important to a tapered axle. Here's where a bearing used to be
There was nothing left and I probably damaged the axle housing as well, although I didn't really look. Also I hated the tapered axle, the hub puller is just a pain and it's a tough trail fix. This also allowed me to go with 4 wheel disc brake setup since the new axle was basically a scratch build.

    So...

I bought another set of gears, I could not get the pinion out of my old axle.

Got those gears all setup and my powerloc installed.

It wasn't as straight forward as I'd hoped. Unfortunately for me I did all my measuring, axle length cutting and spline work using the open differential that was in the new to me axle. Everything was perfect until I put the powerloc out of the old axle in and realized my axles shafts were too long. The ends of the axles are less than an inch apart inside the open diff but the powerloc won't let the ends of the axles get that close together. Luckily I had plenty of spline length to just shorten my axles. One side needed 3/8" cut off the other 1/2".

I went a bit wider than stock width with this axle so I wouldn't have to run wheel spacers. It's not as wide as a my wide track front axle but it's wider than a narrow track. I forget what my WMS measurement is. Anyway this is the first time I feel like my wide track front axle isn't completely offensive to my eyes. Here's the stance with the new rear axle.

what method or tool did you do this with? How precise do you need to be? Thinking more about squareness rather than specific length to be cut off.

Nothing bad about slightly wider axles and lots of good. JMO...I would use the later cj molded plastic fender flares and think they would look perfect. I don't like them on narrow track but on wide track they look good to me.

I used a cut off wheel with one of the aluminum diamond discs on it. I cut a little at a time to avoid building up too much heat. I'm not worried about them being perfectly square since they don't seat on anything. I wrapped a strip of duct tape around the axle to have something to follow and cut it straight as possible. I chamfered the end and filed the rough edges off after the cut.

Thanks James, the extra width will be nice to add some stability, or that's what I'm telling myself anyway. I don't think I'll add the flares, this Jeep is either just bopping around town in nice weather or I tow it to the trails. It seems like you use yours a lot more than a lot of us do, if I were on the freeway a lot or in the rain/snow I might look at the flares.

thinking the same...especially on side hill tippy off camber...nice to know you have a bit wider platform under the jeep.

    Perfect for me too...

My tire extend 6" out of the body on each side, so you're look just perfect.

and you will love that extra stability, even on the road. :p

They look like original BFG Mud Terrains. I really liked those patterns.
